I've been having a nightmare of a time with my ping/latency in CS:S

I've got my favorite servers list and they all read around 15-20, but once i actually get onto a server it reads as 45-60.

Sometimes i'll notice my gun animation is stuttering, check my ping and it's jumped to over 100.

On one server it reads as over 150 once i get connected and slowly drops to normal levels after a few minutes, which is a pain as i get kicked 3-4 times waiting for the ping to drop to levels the server accepts.

I've got nothing else running on my machine when i game, i close my browser, my torrents, msn, the lot. But i still get the same problems.

Any ideas?

Are you sure it's down to your ping? Could it be a software/hardware problem when the map first loads?

I've just been kicked again, from the server ALC admis. Ping was around 70 when i connected, then jumped to 300ish, then i got kicked when it hit 400. :(

It's only one particular server that causes the massively high ping after connection, other just give me a variable ping.

Jan 2006 I got zero of either.

After a steam update since then I get plenty varying on the server and its tic rate.

The values to alter that might help are
rate
and the other two commands are something like
cl_cmd
cl_update

Just tried old CS and the ping was jumping from 400 to 250 to 300 to 90 to 350. Driving me nuts.

Make absolute sure there's no games updating in the background as well. When the new steam update took place, I loaded up CS 1.6 and it was updating CS:S in the background. Try lowering your rates as well, sometimes this will ease your ping slightly. As mentioned before, get net_graph 2 up, any large red lines are packet loss (well, it is for 1.6.. don't know about source). If you're on a router, try rebooting it, usually tends to work for me. If all that fails, I've no idea :(

Ive had that problem with Blueyonder. I get normal pings in 99.9% of servers. There usually 1 or 2 inparticular that cause me to have a ping of 120+. Only on a night-time, and it must be blueyonders fault. The only other person in my clan that gets it is also on Blueyonder (Albeit in scotland).

Last night i rebooted the router and i managed to play fine for an hour.

This morning it back to being unusable again :(

I get random ping spikes like that to in CS 1.6, drives me nuts.

Im on Tiscali BB, and think its more to do with that then the game as it also happens on BF2 to.

And i notice your in plymouth, i live just outside but go Plymouth uni. :)

More hassle tonight. Playing fine ages then suddenly it all goes poop, juddering (with me usually dead once the juddering stops!)

Worst event of the night was covering the loading door on assault, freeze, single flicker of white from a flash/bang and seeing two dead CTs on the floor while a third one kills me :(

I normally use the one which shows loss and choke for quick reference, is it net_graph 3 maybe.

I think the community server is quite good, I find my lag varys by the server
