Anybody use a NAS box ?

Did a bit of looking around last night. The Synology or QNap does not support the Windows Media Connect protocol to stream to an Xbox 360. It will be added to the Synology in a future firmware release.

You can't go wrong with the Buffalo Linkstation to be honest.

Edit: When I was looking at NAS boxes the Netgear 101 had LOTS of heat issues. It generally did quite poorly in the reviews that I read.

Thanks for that. I checked out their forums and I read that they hope to include it in the future. I guess I will have to wait until then!

However I didn't realise that these could do so much; act as an ftp sever, photo server, supports PHP and MySQL, and you can leave it downloading whilst the pc is off - it even does Bit Torrents!

As for the Bit Torrents, how does this work? Does the Download Redirector manage them itself or can you install a client such a Azuerus?

Serious vote for the Synology here, just installed one in an office today with a 500GB Samsung Sata drive in it.

Not sure how the redirector thing works, i think its a case of installing a client piece of software that then sends the torrent files onto the synology box for downloading.

To quote from the admin page off the config page:

After enabling this service, users may install Synology Download Redirector to add download tasks for download of Internet files to this server. Users must comply with all applicable laws and regulations when using this download service.

This is the bit I don't get. You set of a Torrent running on your PC and then say send the file to the NAS and then turn the PC off?! I am confused

Basically, you download the *.torrent file you wish to download. Add it in the File Redirector and then it is added to the queue. Turn your PC off and then x minutes/hours later, the file is sitting there ready to go.

^^^ Sounds great!

I posted on their forums yesterday asking if they knew how long it would be until they support the 360 and got this reply:

We are purchasing a Xbox 360 for our RD team to study and develop the media capabilities using the Xbox.

So its probably not coming in the immediate future, but hopefully not too far off - as long as the R&D team don't spend all day playing the 360!

Just heard from Thermaltake - these units will be with us on the 23rd/24th of this month. :D

Do you have a price?

Also can you ask them if it hardware/software RAID and what Intel SATA controller is used?

I have been looking in to a NAS box for a long time now and have still not come to a conclusion. The best one I have found yet is the Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ which has very good reviews and can do just about anyhting. Best price I have found for it so far is £523 for the 256MB version. Synology are working on a web interface to replace the File Redirector. Then you'll even be able to remotely access your Syn and add files to the download queue. Neat!

I've got a 106e myself so can't wait for this feature to be released. I haven't changed the firmware yet though.

Regarding the Thermaltake box, still no answer but will try tomorrow. :)
