If you had to pay a guy 50 quid to fix a soundcard I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you probably are not going to make much money trying to fix peoples computer.
You got ripped off bad, the guys probably at the pub tellin his mates about you.. I do this on the side now and then, usually make about 30/hr and they pay my rates for parts (10% markup). I avg. maybe 5000 a year on the side with that.

some of us try and hide any computer savvy we have....majority of people who approach you will be family/friends and their friends and you will end up with a pint or a free dinner after you have done the job.
I used to fix computers as an extra job and normally got something like £40 for a reload, and £30 for a fix would could take up to a few hours.
You'll never make mega money from doing this and most of the jobs will probably be from friends of friends or family who want to pay nothing or maybe a few pints down the pub.
