just wondering if anyone here streams on twitch an makes much from it

I was watching a h1z1 stream an the guy got about $300-$400 in $3 average tips in about the 20 odd mins I saw .....shocked to say the least

id never consider paying to watch someone play games before

from what i've seen you need to be in like the top 20 players in the world for that game or female to make any money.

it's not jut donations they get money from sponsors and the number of subs they have. it's why they say "if you like the stream make sure you hit subscribe", etc every 5 minutes.

then it just snow balls from there, they get more twitter subs, youtube subs, etc.

i play with a top level player who streams but he never has any more than 5 viewers. he's the best sniper i've seen on destiny yet he's still not good enough to make money. he's ranked in the top 100 which is crazy good but still not high enough to make any money.

if he was female and hot i bet he would have 500+ viewers all the time.

i_rek_you was streaming yesterday and she is nowhere near his skill level but she's female and probably looks like kim kardashian to most nerdy geek gamers so she has a high number of viewers constantly.

there is a guy in the mobile section who has a decent "gadget" youtube channel. his presentations skills are really dry though so i doubt he'll ever make any money from it.

This generally isn't true, although while it helps majority of the most popular streamers are not top 20 in the games they play or female.

You definitely don't need to be in the top 20, or a "hot female". I was watching one Destiny streamer who was carrying people in Trials and he was very good, not in the top 100, but could go flawless easily enough with a half decent clanmate and a donator.

His setup was 1 day out of the 4 he would carry donators with it being on a highest-paid/first-come basis. For that one day, he was probably making about $500. Not really enough to make a living out of, but for one day's work, it's not to be sniffed at.

He was sharing a spreadsheet with the queue of donators and how much they'd donated, hence why I have a rough idea of how much he was getting.

that's a very special case as it's trials and people who are crap will pay to be carried for loot.

say for instance trials didn't exist, he wouldn't make any money at all.

This disproves what your saying, if his the best sniper in the game and he has 5 viewers its not just based on skill. If you take Destiny for example TripleWreck is not the best player, and he will openly tell everyone that, but he the most popular streamer in destiny right now. Its not just his skill level either, his fun too watch, interacts with subs, helps subs and is a nice guy.

There was another streamer, I can't remember his name now but he was average at best, but was really funny and joked about sucking, he has had like 1000 people online at times.

Moreover looking at DTR I'm guessing your friend is GoEasySonny, if so some of it could be that I've never seen him in the community personal, never seen him on reddit, on sweaties and so on. You don't just ride your skill, you need too also promote yourself, some guys like mtashed have their youtube channels and series like crucible school to try and get their name out there, it works well.

Edit: Just saw GoEasySonny montage on youtube, its really good, but Ive put up random crap that has more then 87 views, his not even trying is he, a quick post on r/crucible for the montage post ever week would easily get him a lot more views.

Jeez I get more than 5 viewers when I'm streaming some UE4 gamedev!

It's mostly about being personable and involving people, I watch sometimes, never paid. It's the minecraft generation I guess that are into it the most.

The most important part of being popular on twitch is being entertaining. Look at Lirik for example - easily the most popular streamer on twitch and is maybe above average on a few games and plays a huge variety of games but still constantly has 25k+ viewers.

And without a cam which is most impressive to me.

The people right at the top make a fortune, that's for sure.

If you're caught in the middle ground though, it's a very different situation. A lot of the sponsored streamers you'll see, people think they're earning a fortune but reality is that it's probably not as good as an average wage job.

And on top of that, it's pretty exhausting. Many of them will be working 12 hours per day, every single day, but more than that they're being chirpy, energetic and entertaining. There's no opportunity to sit back for a few minutes and think.

He's the most popular 'normal' gamer but if you delve into the scary world of dota streamers, there's streamers that are more popular than Lirik.

He's great though, he plays A3L so well!

I watch dota streams almost every day, who is more popular than him?

Arteezy usually gets around 15-20k, right? I think singsing gets around similar.

I think there might be a few streamers who have more followers than him but I haven't seen anyone get such consistent high viewers + subs.

This is on point, the hardest part would be playing well with the distraction of the chat etc and keeping up your personality the whole time.

realkraftyy is a good Destiny streamer to watch, really chill guy and a beast in PvP. Almost all of the girl streamers I've watched are personalities rather than decent players.

You have to put a lot in, but least they get to make money doing something they enjoy.

Would love to know how much Tru3Ta1ent makes he streams 7 days a week from about 10 am till about 7 or 8pm, he seems to get donations all the time.

He's a very good streamer with a brilliant community, plays mostly FG games but has played a fair few AAA games too, fun to watch him on H1Z1's battle Royal.

Love to know if he makes a good living out of that...........streaming 7 days a week? Tough going there.

Yeah, realkraftyy is solid streamer, and its true, you hear the top streamers complain about not getting to just play other games. With most things there will be a 1% that make a tonne, then a huge mid class where you get enough too live and not have to hold a day job.

Outside of having too have a personality you really have to market yourself, help other people, spend time with the community. Its a much harder job then most people think, its not just being good at a game.

that's 70 hours a week.

minimum wage is £455 a week for that number of hours.

but i guess they don't see it as "real" work but being paid for doing a hobby, much like a professional kayaker or any other professional sport player. i would love to make even 5% of ronaldo's wages for playing football for example.

some people are happy to be paid just to do what they enjoy. over earning slightly more for something they hate doing.

I don't think skill comes into it for the most part, sure you have to be decent at the game and not respawning every 5 seconds. To me its about personality, the person you're watching has to have decent charisma and be entertaining to watch. It's getting the perfect balance of both skill and personality.

Its all about personality and how confident you come across. Being a hot female helps too. A lot of the best streamers advertise their channel and do things like give a ways and stuff like that.

I don't really get watching other people game i find it boring unless i want to check out the game.

I stream sometimes for my girl friend who likes to watch i sometimes get 2-5 other viewers depending on the game. Which i find weird cause i am average at best and don't speak or anything cause i am normally on skype .
