Anyone a Special Constable or cop?

My first feeling when reading your opening post is that your are only doing this for a "power trip". If so, you are doing this for the wrong reason.

I have quite a few friends in the force including the Met, and they'll tell you it its no walk in the park. Think carefully that this is really what you want to do and the reasons why.

That said, it will give some good insight before applying for a full time placement. Good luck.

Not doing it for a power trip at all, just think it would be a good and valuable experience, cheers for the advice guys, will have a look at that site when I get a chance.

If it's not a power trip then go for it. Too many see it as a power trip and when they zip on the ballistic armour for the first time they think they are Robocop and untouchable.

They are usually the first to realise the very different reality.

I have a friend in the specials, and a friend who is a proper policeman, they both love what they do. The friend thats in the specials intially applied for the proper police but didnt get in. Hes tried again since being in the specials but no luck, he has all but given up, but he still loves being in the specials. The money/expenses is not so good tho, I think he gets about £2000 a year if I remember right, which I know is a lot for "volunteering", but remember you're doing the same job as someone who earns a nice little wage from it. I think if you're applying for the specials you really need to want to do it, and not just use it as a steping stone.

Yeah I thought my ex was in it for the power trip as he quite self absorbed.. It got very annoying in the end when I had to hear about what happened the night before in town and him being so right about everything...did my head in and was one of the factors that split us... no loss.

Anyway. If you really want to do it you should - from what I heard its very rewarding and you do get some stories to tell.

The training however is extremely intense and (for the ex) was a weekend at a training centre every month for about four months.

And yeah it is a min of four hours...but if you enjoy it you will do more...even if it is hours of paperwork, sitting in the meatwagon at 3am or making tea for the paid policemen and women.

I called the ex 'work experience boy'... I thought it was exploitation the amount of hours he put in (yes I was jealous as these hours weren't with me) but if you have a healthy balance you will get what you want from it.

Good luck!

Watch Sky Cops tonight 8pm on BBC 1. Surely the best job going in the police force?

No direct involvement with the public, no danger of being shot. Simply flying through the sky chasing after car thiefs and the like. : )

Those 'Toy cops' only work 9-5, and don't do much more than provide a 'presence'.

I have the threat of redundancy looming over my head, and having seen the shocking excuses of attempts at driving in London, and being driven off the road twice last week, am seriously considering traffic cops. IMHO there aren't enough of them, and the government seems to happy to use stationary camera's, and people's driving has deteriated as a result of insignifacnt police presence on the road.

my dad's friend was a police dog trainer. Got to play with puppies all day and take the bigger dogs around agility classes. Class job :D

as long as they don't pull out that CCTV footage of you losing cops in your Nissan Micra :p

Also with some of the comments he has made on these forums and his attitude, I doubt he would get in.

I think vehicle crime would be good to get into, like the cops you see on road wars rather than being an actual traffic cop, I'd be interested in the dog units as well but so many different things to do, obviously being a special isn't going to involve any of that but if I decided to make a career of it.

Its one of the best jobs going in the Police Force but you cant just got into it, its highly specialised and a very sought after position. You need to do your street walking first.
If your looking at getting into becoming a 'traffic cop' there will be about another 1000 thinking the same thing in the met already. Policeman with 10yrs service etc will be gunning for it. Its application form filling time, interviews etc etc, its like joining the police for the first time again.
But once your in there believe me its well worth it. High speed pursuits always bring a :D

Anyone can arrest anyone provided you've watched them commit a crime.

Something a lot of places fail to mention -

If you mean citizens arrest you can only perform one of those if the crime you're seeing committed can see the person sentenced to a minimum sentence of over five years.

The courts are not too sympathetic to those who get it wrong! Be warned! You can be done for assault if you forcibly restrain someone.
