Hi,

I currently have my htpc in a hiper slimline case. The case can only accomodate a 1u cooler to the best of my knowlege. I have been suffering constant cpu overheating as soon as i do little more than watch a 720p video. At first i thought this was down the the system temp due to the cramped enviroment of the case. I eventually realised after doing some temp monitoring that it is actually the cooler at fault. I have applied fresh thermal paste however the cpu is still overheating.

After doing a little reading, well quite a lot i suspect that the hiper cooler is only rated for a 5000 cpu (although i have no concrete info, only on a shop i browsed that sold the cooler).

Can anyone recomend me a good cooler to solve my problem?

Many thanks,

Russ

Slight update.

Ive been doing a little more looking and noticed that my core temps arent running the same. Theres a 10 degree difference.
eg
Core 0 - 43degrees
Core 1 - 33degrees

Now it gets interesting...when i turn the heatsink round the temps reverse so now -
Core 0 - 33degrees
Core 1 - 43degrees

Ive also swapped the cpus between my pc's. There is now a 5200 am2 cpu in there, the same 10 degree ish difference between cores remains on both cpu's. When both cpu's are in my desktop pc temps are roughly the same give or take a degree.

This leads me to now think i either have a duff motherboard or cooler. Which would you suggest is the likely culprit?

There isnt a holding bracket on the hiper coolers.

Heres a pic i found of google (not my system) but as you can see its just screwed down. Ive tried adjusting the tension of the screws etc but it doesnt seem to make any difference

Is the Heatsink flat?
That would be the main culprit. If you have a steel rule, use the thin edge (Strongest edge) and run it over the HS. It will show up any non-flatness.

Ive ordered a new heatsink just as i suspect it to be the heatsink. With swapping the cpu's between systems and them both being fine in my desktop ive ruled out a cpu prob.

Heatsink is a cheaper place to start than a new motherboard so ill try that first lol.

I do have a steel rule, unfortunately its in my toolbox in the van at work so will have to wait until mon to try that. Ill be so glad to get this sorted once and for all. Fingers crossed its the heatsink at fault
