Anyone an expert at Mail?

It's a complete mess and I don't have the time or energy to sort through the thousands of emails.

What I would like to do is archive or backup every single email and start fresh.

Is there a way of doing this within the application so I can still search my 'archive' for old emails but keep the interface clean?

It appears you can't do that anymore in the Lion version of Mail.

I can't see anything that lets your archive the mailbox

I assume you're using your own email address rather than something like Gmail? You can archive email using Gmail and still search the archive from within Mail.

Just a thought, could you create a rule to do something like you want? or does automator have a function for this?

Turns out you can simply just archive the entire mailbox and do searches through the archive to get old emails. Brilliant. I've started fresh and setup some smart mailboxes.
