Hey guys,

Will be changing the springs on my mk2 mondeo in the next < month, anyone here done it? The person who i always have help me (read: do nearly everything for me whilst i watch, aka RiPz who welded berger's over) doesn't have spring compressors, and it seems a bit of a waste to buy some for a single spring change.

Does anyone around manc have any that they'd be willing to let us borrow / perhaps help us change them?

Car springs = killers

would like the ones that have the little clips on to stop them slipping off the coils :)

retail for a set (of 3) is £25 ish.. which is fair enough, i'd buy some myself, but my car = a classic mini, it doesnt have springs, so they'll get no use..

so lend away, please :)
 
Just get yourself a bolt with a really long thread, and 2 plates - the top one held in with 2 seperate nuts. job done ;)

I'd rather not die

There's about 400Kg of tension in one of those springs you know... doing what you said would be like trusting a metal plate and 2 bolts to hold half a tonne, right next to your hands - no thanks :)

The cheap ones you get from Machine Mart are just fine.

It's easier to remove the strut complete, then compress and remove the spring itself rather than attempting to compress the spring whilst the strut is still under the wheelarch (some people do it this way)

I did the fronts on the Mondeo the other day, remember to keep the top mount nut dont up until you have hammered the hub off the bottom of the strut. And careful you don't catch the brake disc with the sledge/lump hammer when doing this, they are very easy to catch and chip!

Haven't been arsed to do the rears yet :D
 
Aye, cheap 60mm ones because when I went to move it (having been parked up for 6 months) both coil springs snapped at the top coil. They have a habit of doing that when left unused for long periods.

No pics until I fit the rears, it looks like a funny car at the moment.
 
60mm :O that must be proper low riding, unless the mk1 rides higher.
