Anyone been caught by average speed cameras?

There's always a set of these somewhere on the A38, set to 50mph with the obligatory "this is for your safety" crap that normally gets spouted.

I just go through them at 55mph on the speedo, do that all the way to the exit. No problems so far.

Never been caught, don't know anyone who has. I have to be honest, I tend to stick to the limit in SPECS sections of road.

This was never a technical issue, they have always been able to work on cars in either lane even if they swapped. What held back them prosecuting drivers that did this was the fact they they were only type approved for one lane use.
 
I saw the signs on the A34 for average speed cameras. The cameras themselves were invisible. I didnt even know the technology was that developed.

Me too. There have been a bunch of these put onto the A38 which I drive on everyday, according to the Highways Agency they are temporary and will only be there for the duration of the road surfacing which is ongoing, but the camera gantries have all been securely concreted into the verges...

I noticed that if I stick to a GPS indicated 50, I'm generaly going quite a bit faster than the majority of traffic as well.

this always makes me laugh, last time i was on my way to Manchester, they had average spped cameras set up on the A1, so i slowed to 50mph and kept constant, next thing, this corsa with a female driver flew past me at about 70, then slowed down to 50 for the camera, then speeded up again, then slowed down, repeat as necessary, for approx 2 miles, the funny thing was, she had got maybe 200 yards in front of me in 2 miles this way, and probably used double the fuel she would have if she kept constant 50mph, honestly, some drivers make me laugh.
 
I thought specs that were permanent (eg A14) were to prevent bunching caused by people constantly speeding up and slowing down - thinking being that if everyone does the same speed there'll be no catching up. Not sure if that's correct though.
 
To be honest I try to be sneaky through these, I tailgate lorries when passing the first camera, my numberplate is very low down on my car so there is no way the camera can read it - then speed up through the main section before slowing for the final camera (in case they can issue a fine for a certain speed past a single camera). Not been done yet and have been doing this for months on the M5.
 
They have these on the A38 now just past Ivybridge area going towards and coming back from Exeter. National Speed limit road, limit to 50mph. Yet they arent doing any work. Been through it 3 times in 3 weeks and they arent doing work, just a generator in a closed off layby. Police short of fines or something ?

I know the ones you mean, and I believe the workmen only do their thing at night.

Doesn't stop the stupid cameras being up 24/7 though.
 
When i was ignorant of SPECs i went past a 50 doing way past 70 (did'nt know what the cameras were and thought they were just CCTV :o don't think they signed it either at the time), was'nt until months later i knew what SPECs were. Never heard anything about it and consider myself really lucky, i might have been saved by a lane change as this was a loooong time ago before they sorted that issue.
Have a mate who got done by a 30 limit somewhere in Hammersmith a few months ago.

Where are you meaning? There is a section of 40limit specs near oxford on the A34 which is very much active with camera's...

again, this is not how it works. it doesnt messure your speed past a single camera at all. It works by logging what time you passed camera 1 and 2 then works out your average speed between these two points. The Camera itself has no speed detection equipment on them, they are basically just ANRP cameras.

have you not read his post ?

how can they work out an average of his speed if the first camera never read his numberplate ?

he's saying that as he goes throug the first camera, he tries to hide behind lorrys etc.. to prevent the first camera from seeing his plate.

Next gen SCS will work forwards and backwards apparently so he needs to looks for a small gap between two HGVs. They work great at road works but the only problem is the systems cost so much only two of the cameras actually work (out of 5-7 posts) and normally only in one direction (except M1 J25-28).

The standard trigger point is ACPO guidelines but on a 50 mph limit HGVs normaly go though on the limiter so occasionally the cut off point is lowered to 55mph :D; this requires a shed load of paperwork so is not done very often.

I kept getting fed up with so many numpties putting the first camera immediately behind the start of the speed limit at road works (causing panic braking) and then moaning that capacity plummets. The first camera now has to be after the first repeater. ;)
 
They do work, friend got caught even though I warned him!

In the times when they were new I told him about them and I got the response "But others are doing it", same road 6 months later and only a couple of people were speeding whereas before almost everyone was.
 
I did read an article somewhere that said they were too efficient, because everyone slows down and most of the time you couldn't speed even if you wanted to. The figure was something like 1 in 10,000 people they actually catch speeding, so doesn't generate any where near enough income to pay for them selves.
