Wish i was in a Ramen Shop Counter
In particular the top of Empire State and Rocker fella Centre.

I am in need of a small, compact tripod that I can fit into a messenger bag. I am unsure of what the top looks like, is there a place where I can rest the camera for a night shot or do I need a tripod?

If its the former then I can just get a gorilla pod may be?
 
There's definitely a ledge you can stand a Gorilla pod on up the Empire State, or the diagonal bars you could attach it too. I'm sure I read something about them banning the use of tripods up there (a quick google seems to confirm you at least need a permit).
 
You won't be able to take your tripod, you have to give it to security when you go through the scanners etc.

I had a little 7" tripod stashed in the back pocket of my case and they confiscated it, giving me a numbered ticket.

Reason being the risk of cameras getting knocked off if they're standing on the ledge or whatever. They need to pay more attention to the hundreds of people who stick their arm out over the edge with their un-tethered point and click cameras in my opinion!

I was there in May this year if it helps.
 
Yea I can confirm that the rocker has ledges, the empire has fences round the viewing area. Was there new year 2011, I wish I had taken a gorilla, would have made thing a lot better (didn't have anything)
 
I always take my Grollia Pod SLR Zoom on holiday with me.
It is the best tripod for adapting to different situations.
