With the shocking state of the Market I have finally had enough and am thinking to build a log cabin on some family land.

I wondered if anyone has done similar and had any tips / advice.

Cheers,

Olly:)

Thought about enquiring just how much it would be to properly build your own house to order with a private firm - you might be surprised?

My grandad and uncle built one a couple of years back in the garden of my uncle's cottage for my cousin to live in. It had a large open plan living room/kitchen/diner, with a shower and toilet, and upstairs one massive bedroom. For some reason, no planning permission was required because it wasn't a substantial structure... or something along those lines?

Anyways, it's a nice little place, has everything you need in there and is really quite spacious. I was a bit jealous when I saw it. :p

That's what I am looking at, I checked with the local planning officer and because it's a temp structure I can get away with 0 planning permission and only building regs if I don't have an oven.

9mx5m is what I am thinking with solar panels, a wood burner and 2 night storage heaters. Connected to mains water and power via my parents house. It's just for me to use when I am at home as I work away during the week at the moment. Saving has so far got me no where and I don't fancy 1.5K a month on a mortgage right now (I hope to travel for a year at 29 or 30).

My friends have one and rent their house out which is also another option if I do get a house. I'm after a classic Cornish cottage or failing that any house in my home town would be highly rent-able during the summer months.

My Dad's built a few in his time when he worked for a building company. They were really nice - all the mod cons, very spacious, very cheap, very warm inside.
Mind you, that had to be a good twenty years ago now!
