Anyone came across this odd ram problem before? (4 slots)

It must be about 2 years ago when I built this PC and had problems with the ram since day 1. When running in dual channel the ram has tons of errors and is unusable. It is 2 slots of 1 gig Corsair TWIN2X 5400 DDR2. Single channel was fine and its been running like that for ages.

Ram’s so cheap now I decide to get 4gig and see if I can force 4 slots to run in single channel or to find out if one stick is faulty. Anyway to cut a long story short after testing all 4 sticks everything works fine.

It seems I can run an old and new stick together in dual channel. New and new dual channel. But not old and old.

Anyone came across a problem like that? It doesn’t really make any sense to me. Glad its working but curious as to what could cause the problem.

The initial two sticks were in the wrong slots ?? (dual channel boards have the slots colour coded, insert pairs into the same colour starting with the one closest to your Northbridge).

Just a guess....

They where in right slots. I can have all 4 bits of ram at once. But it has to be an old ram with new ram in dual channel mode. Cannot use the 2 new together with 2 old together.
