Hi,

Going to take this in a few weeks and I've been having a look at whats changed and what have you (I remember the maximums being in there a lot).

Anyway has anyone done it? Any pointers? How many questions in this one (I think the last one was 50).

Thanks,

M.

Is there an upgrade exam for VCPs on VI3 or do you need to attend a VMware class again and take the full exam?

Upgrade exam - it's not free it's £110+VAT

I believe, though not 100% sure, that you have to do the exam before the end of the year or you have to sit through another course next year (upgrade course).

Edit from VMware:

  1. If you are currently a VCP3
  2. Take and pass the VCP4 exam. This option will only be available until December 31, 2009. The What's New class is strongly recommended. Beginning in 2010, VCP3s must attend the VMware vSphere 4: What’s New class in order to upgrade.

Whoops.... free? Not sure how I made that up.... I just knew in my mind I have to do the exam before the end of the year or it would cost [a lot more] money....

Yeah - that's why I've booked it - work aren't going to pay for another course next year. If they do offer training I'd rather it be in a different area anyway.

Planning on getting this done before the end of the year so I don't have to sit another training course. VMWare / Pearson Vue are doing a free resit before the end of the year (You need to preregister for the resit).

Definitely a worthwhile upgrade to stay current in the VCP line of things without having to shell out too much cash

Well I did the exam today I had registered for the Second Shot and thankfully did not need it!

Pass mark of 300 needed and I got 400! 85 questions and 90 minutes to do it. It wasn't the hardest exam I've ever done but thankfully it's now out of the way!

If anyone needs anything then please let me know and I'll do my best to answer. Lot's of questions on Maximums, Minimums, HA, DRS and Fault Tolerance if you want to know where to start to revise.

Exam cost was the standard £126.50 (inc VAT).

Did you use any books, i will be doing 4 myself next year. But will be using the vcp3 book and the up-grade book from the whats new 4 course.

I used all of the PDF's on VMWare's website:

http://www.vmware.com/support/product-support/vsphere/

There's quite a few on there. I'd suggest being absolutely spot on with stuff like partition sizes, maximum LUNs, maximum memory and also the opposites (like minium memory, system requirements, etc.)

Edit: also need to look at licencing, different versions of products (such as differences between enterprise and enterprise plus).

Congratulations on the solid pass mark!

Any / all pointers you can add are most appreciated m4cc45. Have you had much hands on with vSphere? Also how long roughly did you spend revising.

I am wanting to upgrade from VCP3 but with no (as yet) experience of vSphere. Will get it installed and running ASAP and have a quick poke around but not got too much time left before the end of the year!!

I'm thinking book one test in semi early December then one late Dec if first attempt not fruitful.

Many thanks

Hi Morf.

I'd book one now as you can get a free second shot - so I'd potentially book one for the end of November and then you have a month to do the free retake should you require it.

The VCP3 exam is very similar. I've had about a month hands on with VSphere4 and I revised for about a week using all of the practice exams on VMWare's site and also reading all of the PDF's I could find regarding HA / Maximums (must have been 20 questions on this) / HA (another 15 questions on this) / Minimums (another 15 questions on this) and then there were various questions regarding random stuff such as LUN masking, difference between VM applications, questions on which VMWare application did what and finally some licencing questions.

Legend cheers fella, booked first one for early december and can only book 2nd one after I've possibly failed the first.

Gonna struggle to get too much hands on due to current datacentre move + san changes but will give it 110%.

Thanks for the heads up on what to revise, much appreciated!

You're welcome. If I can be of any more help then please feel free to drop me a mail and I'll do all I can. One other thing to look at: Screenshots of the features / Diagrams of the features as this cropped up in a few questions (i.e. what is the feature being shown).

I think that's it for now!

Obviously you need to do the official training course otherwise you don't get the qualification. I did mine with ETC in Birmingham. They discounted us the price and the course was very good.
