Howdy,

I only got my 360 back from MS after the beautiful 3 red lights 2 weeks ago. But nowe I have another problem (I actually think it was already there before, but it seems to be worse now).

A long time ago, my Splinter Cell DA disc could a nice perfectly circular scratch in the top right of the disc. The game did crash now and then, but I completed it about 20 times, so was ok.

Well now my Forza disc (after playing that for many hours) as several huge, perfectly rounded scratches on it to. The bigger issue here is that the cd is now "borked". All FMVs show as scrambled colours, and certain tracks will not load and my 360 crashes.

I have already spoke to MS and they are collecting the 360 again for repair, but say that forza is not part of the disc replacement program (even though its a MS game)? I will get my money back, or a replacement for this, as its the faulty consoles fault that the disc is screwed and if they think im paying out another £40+ for a 10+ day old game they have another thing coming.

I just want to know if anyone else had this problem? did you CDs get scratched? Or is it just my 360 doing this?

ta!

Well my pro evo has a nice circular scratch but still works...

..then again it did happen because my sister picked up the 360 while it was on and carried it around a bit

its a known fault on ones using certain cheapo drives , you can fix it with a mod that costs about 20pence , have a look on google

Had 3 different 360's since launch day and not one scratched disc. (sold and rebought at different times not faulty units)

Yeah, my 360 is currently at MS having a disc read/scratch problem hopefully sorted (touch MDF). My Forza 2 disc has a big circular scratch on it too and might not work again, but I'll only find that out when the 360 returns. It's also scratched my GoW disc, but luckily that rubbed off.

One thing I've noticed is you can tell when the 360 is about to scratch a disc because the drive spins down, so as soon as you hear that drop in volume from the drive, if you get up quick and switch the 360 straight off, you can save the disc. It seems most likely to happen on mine when the console is very hot after a few hours of play.

Forza 2 should be added to the disc replacement program since it's published by Microsoft, but no idea when.

Can I just ask how you were planning to go about that, since I'm in the same position and certainly don't want to buy a £40 game again. Failing all else I will probably get a dvd repair device which cost about a tenner I believe.

Don't know how I will get it, but I will... I will just kick up a real fuss and wont leave them til I get what is rightfully mine. Its not our fault MS have constructed a poorly built machine (great machine, but badly made). Cos of that, its scratched a CD I have paid £40 for... so I will get my money :)

Anyway, I just gave my CD a good hard rub (oh err) and it works perfectly now... what does this mean? Does this mean the circlular scratches where not scratches? They certainly looked like it, but after this rubbing... they seem to have disappeared slightly?

Im not gonna play it either way until I get my replacement!

fish99 it would be good if you could let us know when you get ya 360 back and let me know what they have done? Did they actually replace the DVD drive? And can you see if it works now?

Okeydokey will do :) It was only posted to MS on monday though so it'll take a while yet.

The mark on my GoW rubbed clean away, but the Forza 2 scratch goes about half way round the disc and isn't coming off.

Just sent mine back for the same reason. Afaik it's the sammy drive that scratches, my GOW disc had to be replaced. Knowing my luck i'll get a three lighter back...

How can one console have so many faults... really should have been a recall on these things!

Gonna be back at MS twice in 3 weeks!

They sure collect your consoles quick though.

Last time i sent it back it took 3 days for UPS to get here, this time was SUPER fast. I arranged with MS for it to be collected at 8pm last night, got a knock at the door at 11am this morning and it was UPS

It was that quick I hadn't even boxed my 360 up, fortuntely I kept the box that MS sent my 360 back to me in last time (as I knew it would die again) and quickly chucked it in there and sent it on its way!

20-25 days waiting time now thou, opposed to the 15 last time :(

My thoughts on the subject

In my experience when I get a DRE, there is indeed what appears to be scratches on the DVD but they are in fact scuff marks which can be removed with a soft cloth and possibly some cleaner fluid. This has happened to be several times where a game would literally refuse to load a certain point until I cleaned the scuff marks off.

Interestingly, I recently bought a 2nd 360 for upstairs use and it has never given me a DRE, despite using the same Forza DVD I have been using in my first 360, which has given me a couple of DRE and some in-game lockups. The drive type is the same in both consoles - however, the 2nd 360 runs cooler than the 1st, so it could be a heat related issue. The drive sits right above the GPU, and the heat from this is either causing the drive electronics to suffer or is actually warping the DVD slightly which causes it to scuff on the tray?.... who knows.

I had replaced the X-Clamps on the 2nd 360 and applied AS5 (it had the 3RLOD fault) so maybe this is why it now runs cooler than the other one.

Needless to say I find myself using the upstairs console even though its hooked up to a 17" TFT vs the 37" downstairs - especially for the Endurance races ;) Don't wanna get 2 laps from the end and have the thing crash on me!!

I thought my machine had scratched my forza disk as laguna seca wouldnt load properly it looked like you were driving on acid

I took the disk out and there was a mark about an inch long which, to my relief, rubbed off with a bit of elbow grease and now it works fine very strange indeed.

Asked Microsoft this by email-

"Hi, can you tell me if Forza 2 will be added to the 'disc replacement program' and when. Many Thanks"

and got this reply-

"I deeply apologize for the inconvenience and as I understand, you purchased Forza Motorsport 2, however, it did not include with the package the game manual."

...along with a link to the pdf manual  So Microsoft employ people who can't read
