Anyone else feeling rather smug with their launch 480 GTX purchase?

As title really, I've had mine for around 18 months (since launch) and it's still arguably the 2nd fastest single GPU card around! It's a great feeling when you can still buy any game knowing that your card will be more than up to the task :p

I'd like to hear other peoples opinions on whether you think it's worth splashing the cash once every couple of years on one high end video card, or would you rather spend a smaller amount but perhaps upgrade more often?

well personally i only bought a top end card once when the 4870x2 was released, that thing was such a monster.... as in literally it was that loud you would half think it was going to jump out any minute and beat **** out of you...sigh.
ended up watercooling it which was great an all but expensive and hassle for me.

So yeah as someone who REALLY values a quiet pc and likes to think i can leave it on 24hours without it sucking too much power, i prefer to get mid end cards more frequently.

Also i am one of those ppl that gets 'the upgrade itch very often' and with cheaper cards its less expensive to upgrade more frequently.

On the other hand i recently boguht the kfa2 580 that comes with the accelero on it....sigh i had to take it back cos i just cant afford stuff like that (and shoudlnt have got it in first place) but it was so awesome, i mean i couldnt even tell difference if fan was idle/load it was so quiet.

I feel rather smug about my GTX470 SLI purchase - cost me less than a GTX480 to for the pair (new) :D

People who bought the 8800GTX at launch and GTX480 at launch have definitely got their money worth out of those cards, but personally I try to nab the next card down (or sometimes the one below that depending how close performance is to the top end card) when the price dips to the point where a pair are around the price of the top card:

8800GT SLI
GTX260 SLI
GTX470 SLI

I am still well chuffed as I purchased my Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 "Special Edition", when it was on offer with the 10% discount. Just too good an offer to turn down, especially as it was cheaper than my previous card, which was an Ati Golden Sample 4870 ;)

As soon as new graphics cards are released I can't resist the temptation of buying one, I'm already prepared moneywise for the next generation of cards.

I will be buying Nvidia's top end card no matter what the price is, at least I know my old and current games will still work as well as new ones.

got my gtx480 when ocuk did them at £199 :) , not as fast frame rate wise in my system compair to my 6970 (now crossfired) but some games seem smoother on the gtx480 than on the 6970's.
but i got it as a spare while my 6970 was on rma

5850 that did 1050Mhz core clocks, or a 40% overclock for 30% increased performance, for half the cost of a 480gtx, out 6 months earlier, uses less power, is quieter, yeah, not a bad card.

Got a GTX 480 RMA replacement for my GTX 470. So not from release, but more than happy with it. Picked up another 480 for SLI, and with my HAF-X both cards run nice and cool wiith very little noise.

Adding voltage and overclocking tho is another matter with regards to noise and heat.

Haven't found any game that I can't play yet, and I'm sure both will be more than enough for BF3.

I got mine recently but for <£200 brand new from from OcUK! Bargain!

I slapped a better cooler on it and its perfect!

Ahem, cough cough arguably it's not:

Tests done on Amd launch drivers too!;)

Seriously though it is still a monster of a card, can't argue there!:D

Although one of the better cards I have owned, my 4870X2 at last wasn't meeting my own personal expectations, so when I saw the non reference Gigabyte SOC 480 on sale I couldn't say no to such a drastic price reduction, I think it was slashed to around half price.

The performance when AA is applied is very impressive, with better minimum and average frame rates (and quite often maximum fps as well), and has as good if not better IQ in game than my old Radeon had, which perhaps is to be expected even with considering the subjectivity of this particular aspect.

So, it is without a doubt the best card I have owned, and I will look forward to letting it stretch its legs a little more with a Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge upgrade. I am more likely to stick with a single gpu for a while to come, (I don't intend to start going down the road of increasing my resolution and then having no choice but to require two or three gpu's to support the higher res adequately), but if I did dabble in dual gpu again I would go SLI since I haven't tried that yet; two gpu's @ 1920x1200 is not overkill imo. Had it not been a non reference design then I probably would have gone for the 560 2gb, if not maybe a 6950 with a view to crossfiring soon after.

It's been a nice change to try out the green team which I think has made the upgrade refreshing for me, it has been a long time since I've experienced that 'wow' factor when upgrading a gpu. So many of my previous gpu's have been Radeons so it was certainly time for a change to keep things varied and interesting. So yeah, I think I made a good decision for a number of reasons. :p ;)

Thank goodness it handles the Stalker series at maximum, AMD / ATi cards seem to love those titles, and the last nVidia card I had (admittedly a while ago) couldn't even play the first title well at all. I'm not even sure if I had modded SOC, but god it ran like a dog.

My 9700pro is still better than all of these tanks and more reliable.

Bow down before your god young childen!

The 8800GTX is the best card I have owned so far. Damn, that card lasted a long time. I'm also quite pleased with my 580, but I can already see the end of the road for it.. If what Nvidia is saying is actually true, then Kepler will be 3-4 times more powerful per-watt than Fermi. Happy days.

It won't be AND thats not what they've said. Double precision performance is said by Nvidia to be 3-4 times better than Fermi, simply dropping to a new process node should, without fail every single time double performance per watt, easily. Imagine a 580gtx shrunk to 28nm, with the exact same performance but half the power usage, there you go, performance per watt increased, up the DP to SP ratio, and there you have your 3-4x performance per watt. Gaming doesn't use Dual precision power, at all.

Kepler should increase performance, I can 100% guarentee you, to the tune of a bet for every piece of currency in the world today it will NOT be 3-4 times faster. 70-80% is likely, much more is very unlikely(but due to skipping 32nm theres a chance AMD/Nvidia can break 100% this time around, but not hugely likely).

I don't see how anyone can feel smug about the GTX480 or GTX470 for that matter, power hungry, noisy and hot running cards, I wouldnt use them if they were given to me.

Ahem, cough cough arguably it's not:

It all depends on what benchmarks you look at and how pedantic you are ;) to be fair the 570, 480 and 6970 are all pretty much on a par with each other.

What I was really trying to get at is in terms of video card lifespans my 480 has lasted me brilliantly well. Also with new cards maybe not coming until after Christmas it could well last me nigh on 2 years

Same, got mine at launch for £180 too, best purchase I've made gpu wise. Recently acquired a second identical one for £70 odd
