Anyone else got an allotment?

I got one about 2 weeks ago :D. The story so far can be read in my allotment thread.

We've got a whole day booked in down there on Friday to finish digging out the beds and recycling the shed into compost bins. I'll update sometime over the easter weekend.

I'll have a proper read of your site when I'm at home but it seems like my motivation is pretty much the same as yours. It saves money, it's healthy and fun and most of our fruit and veg is now going to be fresher than anything you could buy.

Girlfriends parents have them, whenever we go to visit them we come home with a carrier bag full of fresh home grown vegetables, its great.

At bloke I work with has one and is currently moaning his bag off about all the rain we've been having as it's turning his beloved allotment into a bog apparently.

I'm probably older than you, but i don't know about being wrinkly ;)

I do it so that I can have a fresh, cheep and tasty supply of veg that hasn't been dragged half way accross the world in a truck / ship full of chemicals to stop it going off.

The downside is that you can only eat what is in season the good side is that it's nearly the asparagus season, and my 2 hour old asparagus will be sooo much better than the dried out spears from sainsburies that have been flown in from Peru. It costs me £18 a year for my allotment and I suspect that with a time input of between 4 and 8 hours a week you should be self suficient in veg for most of the year.

I thinks its a great idea, and will be well worth all the hard work!

My parents used to have a huge allotment sized patch at the end of the garden. I was young then, and the pea plants were taller than me! But i loved to pick out the fresh peas, they tasted soo sweet. You cannot ever beat fresh food.

Now we live in a house with a garden twice as small as our veg patch :( I miss the good old days.

Not got a allotment, but changed the layout of the garden this year to make space for a veg patch.

Tomatoes, Red Alert, Moneymaker, Campari
Spring Onions, two types can't remember
Radish, French breakfast
Lettuce, Tomthumb
Spinach,
Garlic,
Chives,
Coriander,
Chillis, Inchanga, Bird Eye, Nipon taka, Thai hot
Peppers, Giant bell pepper
Basil, Genovese
Rocket, Wild
Fennel

No, I have a garden :p

Joke....every time I think of allotments, I think of flat caps, geordie racer and Arthur Fowler.

I was offered one last year and I just wish I had time for an allotment but work precludes it unfortunately. But I do grow a lot of my herbs in the garden.

(And I'm not as old as you DMP, there again I could be wrinkly I guess :D )

I don't have an allotment, but we do grow a fair bit of veg in a section of the grounds. It keeps us supplied with virtually everything we need (veg-wise), and the rest is sold locally.
