Hi all, happy new year! :)

I am trying to buy a couple of games on Steam (Civ 4 complete and Silent Hunter 3) but when I get to the 'Payment method and billing information' screen and click continue, I get the following message:

"There seems to have been an error initializing or updating your transaction. Please wait a minute and try again or contact support for assistance."

I have tried purchasing with Paypal and also 2 different cards directly. It has been like this for over an hour.

Found very little by googling, anyone else having snags?

Yep, it's been like that all day for me. I'm not bothered though. It just means there's less chance of frittering my money away on these cheap games :p.

Ive got a quick question - do you have to have the Steam client to buy games? Or can you just do that via the net anyway and install it later?

Just on an old machine that Im gonna replace this week...

Yea what a bloody nightmare.

I just joined steam today to get the valve pack.

The captcha proggie never worked for ages so I ended up downloading steam and signing up that way. Then I had to set up port forwarding for it to connect through my firewall. Then it said I couldn't use the username that was available before to me on the website

Then I tried to pay with paypal and it wouldn't work...so tried with credit card and it declined even though I think it just didn't process it correctly:(

Anyway here's what seemed to make the difference when paying via paypal...I entered my postcode without any spaces:p

Now after I take my axe out of my screen I might be able to play a game or too later!

Good luck!

I had trouble setting up an account on the net so ended up downloading the client.

The net discriminates between upper and lower case charachters while client doesn't so the net will just say registration failed even when is says the new user ID is valid if that id exists with a different set of capitalisation,

Anyhow... if you already have an account or can get the new one to set up you can just buy them on the net to install later.
