I left uni in July and it took me until December to find a job, which hasn't started yet.

Whilst I was looking for fulltime work I was searching for temp stuff as well, but I kept hearing the same thing - that they couldn't promise anything because there are a lot of people willing to do pretty much anything at the moment.

I am signed up to every temp agency in my local area and I have handed my cv in at the supermarkets and local shops, but I always get the same line about high competition for jobs. It isn't just me, 3 of my friends have exactly the same problems. The people I know who have got work recently are all getting it through friends and family (no such luck for me).

The job I have got doesn't start until may (which wasn't made clear until january), and now I am getting very worried about money. At the moment I owe about £2k to the bank, and because I can't afford to pay rent my mum is paying out more than she makes to keep the house going every month. The whole thing is getting me down.

My dad keeps offering to buy me stuff (to fix my car, car insurance) but doesn't seem to understand how depressing it is to be doing busy work all day and that I would rather work for my money.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Take your dad's offer and get your debt out of the way with the bank. Treat it as a 'loan' - you can always give it him back once you get more work. You don't want that debt hanging over you and possibly increasing until the time when you start your job.

Also, don't assume that the current ecenomic climate and lack of jobs is going to stay like it is. Things will change*

* actually hah what do I know :p

But the offer doesn't help me - I can't afford to put petrol in the car so there is no point doing anything with it. He wont give me the money to clear the debt with the bank and nor would I want him to.

That must suck big time actually. The reason I say this was because,I had a couple of jobs since I finished uni last year and I was still feeling the same way. My current job is nothing special either(not a grad one I was so much applying for in vain) but, while I left the others as I please, the current pessimism about the future of the economy(and the mortgage my parents are having to pay) makes me sort of reluctant to do so any soon. Anyway, keeping the story short, life after uni can suck quite a bit and even knowing that(I was going through similar period after college) did not mentally make it more acceptable.

I am in the same position, I have some debt was made redundant in October so I decided to go back to college and learn a trade and low an behold I cant claim JSA because I am in college for 17 hours which is 2.5 days and you need to be under 16 hours to claim JSA if you are at college, so I am learning plumbing to NVQ level 2 from Oct to June and the goverment would rather support people who do nothing.

Its a right kick in the teeth, worked for 7 years and 4 of that was full time and you cant even dip into the pot when you need it, makes me sick and makes you think about declaring tax if you are self employed.

I am desperate because I cant get any part time work and have been applying since Nov

a lot of businesses dont advertise that they are hiring with job centre / agencies etc. Have you tried going around and asking personally if any has a job available?

i might have similar problems soon, assuming i dont get a good enough job around julyish after finishing uni. Id turn to massive crime after about 3 months

I look in every shop/store window, nothing nobody is taking on. I went for a bar job in my village and 7 people had applied on the same day that I went.

Thing is I was made redundant and it was nothing to do with the recession.

i'm in the same position, over the last year i've been screwed several times by employers and currently out of full time work. i'm doing just enough to survive but have so far lost my job, my car, my flat and everything else i own. i'm not finding it hard to get interviews, nor to impress but for some reason no one will offer me a job. Several times i have been one of the front runners and several times it's come down to me and another person but everytime i've lost out. One time i was even told i was the best they interviewed but still managed to offer the job to someone else as they made an assumption about me that wasn't true. Everytime i ask why i wasn't chosen the employer has never been able to give a reason let alone a good one

Wow this thread is sort of like a smack in the face.

I graduated in June and been looking for jobs since Dec. Pretty specific jobs as an 3D animator in either films or games. Though no-one's willing to hire a junior animator at the moment, especially in London. I've got call from agency and asked me to relocate from London and I'm willing to do so if any company would offer me a permanent job. Still waiting to hearing back from them, fingers acrossed but really, this thread got me all worried up again.

I'm in London and just looking on Reed now all the jobs I can do have 60+ applications, since I have got a job lined up I guess I will just have to wait it out. I just seem to have to put my life on hold since I can't afford to do anything.

I know exactly what you mean.

I also graduated last July, and i decided to spent the Summer just relaxing and having fun...still had some loan money saved up :p Anyway i did find a part time thing just to bring in some extra cash, and I went away for a few months to the other side of the world.

Came back start of Jan, and started looking for full time jobs. Took me a month to find one, just finished my first week! I got veryyyy lucky as well, i was told 300-400 people sent in their CV, the director didnt even have time to look at all of them! They only called back about 14 people for an interview, luckily I was one of them, and i dunno, they just loved me, and invited only me back for a 2nd interview, and gave me the job!

Some advice, have you been looking at jobs on gumtree.com? This is where i found this job with a software company, and i had been sending at least 20+ CV's off every day from jobs on there. There were a lot more jobs there a year ago (also where i found that PT job last year), but theres still quite a bit of jobs on there coming every day.

Graduated in July.

Took until September to get one interview, for a position I wasn't even remotely qualified for (i.e. they were just filling in gaps in a schedule).

Followed that up with another interview. Was offered the job. Job got retracted the same day to budget cuts :(

Had a few interviews since but there's too many people with previous experience now - so there's no point taking on graduates.

The other kick in the teeth too is that every single place is just skimming now - be it for the top 3 universities or shutting down after the first twenty applications. It won't be long before I'm competing with this year's fresh graduates also :(

Another issue is that a lot of stuff I'm offered is contract - but if I relocate, there's a very high chance that I'll be the first to go....This and the bottom has now completely fallen out of the industry I wanted to get into has led me to establish the fact it'll be at least 2 years before I get a job I want. At best.

Looking at RAF/Police now....sigh.

Armed forces?

Quite competitive if you want a graduate wage but you'll most likely be snapped up for a job starting around £17k after training.

:edit:

Aha, didn't see that before. Good choice.

How about you and your friends getting together and starting your own business.

You don't need a need a lot to get started, just find an opportunity in your local area and get going. Not everyone has the drive to do it for themselves but you have zero risk in giving it a go.

Just keeping looking every day at what you could offer.

I am happy :)

You realize that adding to your post count doesn't make your **** any bigger right? Jesus these forums have plummeted recently.

M0T it's the same here. I was at college and had a evening job, though it was effecting my college work. So I chose work over college, dropped out. Only to be told after 3 months that I was no longer needed. So I made the wrong choice.

There isn't even jobs to apply for at the moment. So I'm looking in other areas and thinking of staying with family.
