Hey,

I used to love playing CS:Source, but ever since i used Orange my Ping / Latency is awful.

I have tried loads of different servers but whenever some action breaks out or i'm just running, i keep moving, but everyrthing else stops, then all of a sudden i'm dead or miles away from where i thought i was. The pauses are only about 3 or 4 seconds and my ping goes up when this happens.

FPS is between 40 and 60.

Is there anything i can do about it ? (To my router / PC) or do i just contact Orange and shout?

Anyone else have these problems?

I Have the top of the range package, Broadband Max or whatever it is. (£5.00 a month ontop of my mobile phone package)

Its just oranges unique selling point for there BB

Only way to fix it is to pay for a decent ISP ;)

try pinging bbc.co.uk

0-30ms is good
up 50ms is playable
over 100ms makes play difficult.

If your router has a firewall make sure any antivirus / software (on your PC) firewalls are turned off when playing CS. Turn back on for web browsing though.

If all that fails then it seems orange are keeping up their reputation as one of the worst 3 ISP's in the country along with TalkTalk and Tiscali.

ping response seems good, then BANG!, a big spike. See my ping - results below, i have cut out a lot of the stable pings.

I am using a Livebox.... (the orange wireless router). Is there anything i can do to this? Is this the issue? I am connecting to it wirelessly from my PC. Signal strength is "Very Good" and the connection speed is "54.0Mbps"

Code:
Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.131] with 32 bytes of data:

That might be your problem then. Wireless networking is not really suitable for gaming. Even with the best signal you can get drop outs. This is not a problem for copying data or web browsing. When playing on line games even the briefest dropout or slowdown is noticeable. If you are able to connect to your orange router via a network cable give that a try and see if the results are any better.

When I was with TalkTalk outside peak hours my ping was about 30-40ms. In Peak hours it rose to over 150ms. You could also try testing if CS is worse during peak times in the evenings.

The best solution is to change ISP's as Orange have a very, very bad reputation regardless of what happens.

its your wireless mate. without getting too technical, your bump in latency is due to that.

I doubt that. I'd try eliminating that though first to be honest us e a cat 5 cable and take it form though but ?I'd bet its orange doing what they do best

Unless your a fair distance (ie just inside signal range) it only adds 2-3ms, thats my personal experience with 2 other people also playing CS
