Anyone ever been a games tester?

As title really, ive been up all night writing an assignment for hand in today and I could do with some first hand opinions as working as a games tester as ive never done it personally,

whats the salary like? is it as terrible as the articles ive read on the internet? how are the working hours/conditions?

would only really like replys from anyone who has done it

I did alpha and beta testing for games, online games about 4 years ago. Can give you an insight to it of how it was then.

Worked as a compliance tester for VMC Gamelabs the last two summers whilst away from uni (testing that all Xbox 360 games meet microsofts standards).

Salary was pretty average, not bad but not great, and the daily hours were pretty good (9:30 - 5:30 + Any overtime).

Biggest issue was that you wouldn't work every day, and you'd only find out the day before if you were working. Some weeks they'd be nothign to do, so no work.
