anyone ever heard of a .mkv file?

Hi all,

Been given a .mkv file and VLC plays it and i've googled it and by the looks of it, it looks to be the file to encode things into.

Does anyone have any other info on these at all?

EDIT: From googling it does appear to be a file which can say contain a DVD as one single file without compressing the DVD etc.

So it saves messing around with .VOB files etc.

It's supposed to be one of the best if not, the best video codec isn't it.

.mkv's are container files (liek an "avi") --try haali media splitter/coreavc if you want to view them in wmp11 or mpc.

They are like a 'wrapper' containing multiple items - for example in anime .mkv's you can have a tv episode and multiple 'soft' subtitle tracks within the same file. Don't know if that's of any interest to you - but i can imagine with DVD .mkv's you might have access to additional audio track in the one file
