Anyone ever own an Acorn computer?

Acorn Electron, Snapper, Elite, Chuckie egg, Boffin, Starship command, Galaxians. Awesome machine in it's day. You should all watch a programme called "Micro Men", set in the early 80's about Sir Clive Sinclair doing battle with Christopher Curry, Sinclair vs Acorn, brilliant and a real trip down memory lane.

Going to have to dig a tape out now and listen to for an ultimate nostalgia trip.

Starship Command was probably my favourite game on the Beeb. First game I ever hacked was Blagger on the Electron, a Manic Miner clone. I sussed out which memory address contained the lives and poked FF in there for 255 lives.

BBC B - Dare Devil Dennis with multi-coloured sprites !, something my mates Spectrum could never do !

However, he got his own back when Ultimate started releasing all their great games, but the BBC B version of Elite was still the best of the bunch !

My mate had an Electron and we used BBC micros at school.

I had a Spectrum 48+ and I still remember the first time I played a Commodore 64 at a friend's house which made me defect to them.

*Me at the time hearing some amazing music from his room whilst downstairs.*

"What is that music?"

"That's the C64"

*Run upstairs to witness it*

"It sounds amazing, but wait, the game is still loading...."

"But of course, you can even play games whilst loading on some games"

"But that's impossible!"

Holy crap what a machine the C64 was, off topic but damn, just so good. Speccy had great games but what a truly terrible design for a games machine (though I appreciate it was not entirely intended as such) - diabolical audio, attribute clash, etc, etc.

Compared to true full colour graphics with utterly incredible sound - I loved that C64.

.

I remember that c64 with great fondness, bought one with my first pay packet back in 1985 !

Had the bext fighting game at the time...Way of the Exploding Fist !

Yep and I remember you could play game while the main game loaded, was it called "invaderload" or something ?

Yeah Diddyman think it was definitely a space invaders type game, I was just a kid so not sure if I remember any others.

The game that was loading was Barbarian, I have to admit the decapitation special move is what sealed the deal for me. Page 3 girl Maria Whittaker on the box helped too, heh.

I had Way of Exploding Fist too, though my memory mixes it up with IK for some reason.

Anyway, I still remember being utterly blown away at how much more advanced I felt the C64 was, even though it was a direct rival to the Spectrum - I don't think there's ever been such a gulf between 2 directly competing platforms.

Hmm maybe the PS1 vs Dreamcast.

.

We used to have one at school, used to play Lander and lemmings, oh and some weird wave simulation thing.

My BBC B has the Kenneth Kendall speech upgrade, remember that?
plus the ATPL ROM board, no less.

Yeah we had one of those, you had to type in phonetics and it would speak back to you. Imagine if you combined it with that plastic turtle with a pen that the primary schools had!
