Anyone ever put a computer in a box and used it?

things keep changing in my house and my computer gets the blunt of it a lot of the time, so may have to relocate it back upstairs, but to save using my viglen case again(tv unit would house it no problem) I thought I could cut holes in the case box that's next to my tv in room just sitting there with my Pi and bits in lol, its something I'm doing with my Pi in a small pizza box, but obviously my computer needs more cooling.

Even if I cut holes on the side or back where my fans face would I run in to any heat issues? Lid would be closed until I need to get at it. I figured if I do this daft idea I'd still use the machine ha.

Do you mean the cardboard case box?
If so I'd just be wary of rigidity as you don't want a load of expensive parts in a cardboard box to just cave in and get damaged.
I would think airflow shouldn't be too bad however, a few large holes in the box and maybe a couple fans and not use it for too long flat out i.e. 30 mins + of gaming or rendering as it will hardly be cooling optimised.

Unless I have got the wrong idea :D

Thanks for reply.

Sorry I meant inside its computer case inside the box the case came in, but after I posted this I went and did it anyways lol, it's a messy job as I did it quickly, but on idle temps seem fine, just leaving it to run for now before I game or do anything what so ever.

My case does have a top fan at the end of the rear, so need to sort better air flow, 3rd fan I have is fixed to the bottom hdd caddy for hdd cooling.

Ha cheers, did something similar with the pizza box for my pi, tho that's just a pi in a box and 2 adapters, the project has halted at the minute, but gave me the idea for the tower as well as space saving..

I did that within couple minutes of the start of the topic ha, and the kids are in bed.

You know I didn't think too much of the psu heat, nothing was going on during the idling, I've turned it off for now for Xbox lol, but will resume in the morning, I only cut enough space to reach the ports, I could and will likely cut more space round the psu just in a rectangle shape like the other bits, so enough heat/air will get out, i don't think I could fit a fan to the actual box, not because of the thin weak cardboard, but I don't know of any flat usb powered fans?

Sorry, someone remind me......why??

Why I've done this or why to the other persons reply?

If it was aimed at me then I did it because I can, I like daft projects like this, the box was doing nothing other than holding my raspberry Pi and accessories in side while not being used which as you see is next to a radiator(switched off)that's under a window, it also supports small tubs of stuff I haven't sorted out yet on top, basically I have a single line of space in our room, I allowed the missus to have an L shape for her stuff and with needing to relocate my pc back upstairs I figured this was a logical and fun solution, we have cats and rather not have them climbing all over the tower or the kids touching it, plus it's not in the way either.

Only kept the box as it was useful, it's a cheap brand(shop brand) at a not so cheap price, so I'm not bothered about returning the case of care about the box, wouldn't do this with a branded box, I still have the box my pc with a different tower case came in, that's used for storage, won't hack that up, it would fit probably 10 flat ibm thincentres as a minimum to give an idea of box size.

How bizarre.

Not really if you think about it, I am in no position to actually build a computer in a box cardboard or wood and that would just seem a waste of a perfectly good case, only got the case about a month ago, I tend to keep boxes of certain stuff I buy, but rather than dump the box in the shed I have put it to use in a different way this time lol, I'm not going to take a picture of my bedroom, but I can't leave the computer there without being in the box and haven't got the unit space to stand it on, plus I was bored and thought it be amusing :D. I don't have a proper workstation anymore and couldn't keep using the dining table ha.

Ha sort of correct, the box was in my room anyways as I said it had my pi and bits for that project inside it and was using it as a stand for small tubs, my computer was setup up in the living room at my end of the dining table, but now it's in the way.

I only have that one side you see in the pictures for all my stuff and having cats that also like to climb in the window and chase each other around I don't want them touching the computer as there's higher chance than when it was downstairs, but also I have only that place to put the computer that would keep it out the way and so for the fun and sensible option I chose the box so then I would actually use it rather than store it away like it used to be.

It's a daft project to keep use of my computer and not risk cat hairs etc.
