Need Help With RMA'in some Ram?

Hi

Iv recently requested RMA for 2 sticks of Ram that have gone faulty. Ram in question is

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-183-OC

Iv never RMA'd something before so i dont know what the common practice is. I was under the impression that they would request my faulty sticks for testing and replace with same product if found to be faulty. But all they asked for was a copy of my receipt, which i sent them and they replied with a placement offer of £23.27

Iv quizzed them about this stating that originally i paid £49.99 to which they replied we can only offer you market value. To which my reply was the market value of this ram from the same company i originally bought it from is £26.99 not including delivery i also told them i wanted full replacement or enough refund to actually be able to buy the same ram i had.

They have just replied with a link to amazon telling me this ram is just as good. (Linked same ram from Overclockers didnt know if i could link amazon.)

Now originally i had 2 sets of my OCZ ram installed. 4 x 2gb. Im currently only using 2 of the sticks as two went faulty but looking at these sticks they have offered me, the timing is different. Would that cause problems? My Machine is OC'd.

Also why is a Manufactorer not replacing hardware and instead offering money, and why are they telling me to buy a different companys brand.

Im not very clued up with ram specs and timings etc so should i take their offer or tell them to get stuffed..

How old is the memory? The reason for this may be that OCZ no longer manufacture for the memory market which is possibly why they don't have alternatives.

The XMS 3 is just as good if not better memory though.

The memory was bought 31/08/2010. But the second set of ram was bought 13/09/2011.

There are many outlets that still sell this ram, overclockers been just one of them.

How does timings exactly work is it the lower the number the better?

Mine have 9-9-9-20
XMS have 9-9-9-24

Also i read that its not usually good practice to install rams with different timings.

I had 2x4gb Corsair Vengeance Blue, and tried adding 2x4gb Corsair Vengeance Black LP (both 1600MHz/9-9-9-24) and had problems (the sub-timings were marginally different) so both together would only run at 1333MHz, whereas the Blue alone ran fine at 1600MHz... so even different colours should be avoided! :D

Srsly, it's always best to buy both kits together, if not get exactly the same memory if you upgrade later. I'd consider binning the OCZ (or try the MM) and get 2x4gb Corsair/Kingston/G.Skill (or even 30nm Samsung for OC'ing). Or even go 2x8gb/4x4gb as memory is so cheap atm.

Care to share as to why you think its a good offer?

OCZ can't replace your RAM.

They sold their remainder stock to OcUK so they're unlikely to have anything to replace it with.

They've offered you financial compenstation so that you can replace the RAM yourself.

They've offered you £23.27.

At OcUK prices that will near enough pay for 4GB of similar RAM including postage.

Well shouldnt they at least replace it with stock they have regardless of if they dont have the same stuff in.

To me near enough is not enough it might only be about 50p difference but I shouldnt have to fork out extra for replacement parts that are suppose to be covered via warrenty.

Maybe im been petty, arguing with them over so little and just take their offer. I hate having to pay extra for stuff i already have.

I don't think they have any stock.

I believe OcUK bought whatever they had left.

I'm sure if they had anything similar to replace it with they would.

If it bothers you that much ask them for an extra 50p or shop around.

As we're OCZ's largest UK customer they have very kindly allowed us to buy all their memory inventory at a vastly reduced price.

Thanks for all the info mate. Do big companys do this a lot or is this a sign of OCZ in trouble?

Bloody hell 8gb for £29.99. Now thats a bargain.

As said OCZ are no longer in the RAM business. However i would like to point out that the OCZ Gold series was terrible in regards to DOA. I had 2 sets that had 1 stick in each that were faulty and upon a quick Google at the time it appeared that others had the same issue.
I was lucky enough to go through Overclockers UK who tested and replaced next day.
