Hi,

As title really, considering a new rig soonish and wondered if it might be worth going with an EVGA graphics card because of this 'step-up' scheme.

Cheers,

I used to be all for this step-up programme until I found out that EVGA really sting you on their prices compared to retail prices. Also, the 8800GTX wasn't on the step-up programme on launch last year, so if you're expecting to step-up to D9E in February you might may well be horribly disappointed.

That said EVGA is a great brand and I wouldn't really hesitate to buy them even if I didn't plan to use step-up.

But with GT's been overpriced (evga website sells 8800GT for £15 less than you can buy from retailers atm) then this will negate the normal premium price on step up with EVGA.

If the GTS or whatever card you are stepping up to is in short supply and at a price premium with retailers then the EVGA step program may be the cheapest option by far.

In a nutshell, EVGA charge you the difference between their list price of the step up card and what you paid for yours when you bought it plus shipping cost. SO not good if you managed to buy an EVGA 8800GT for £150 say but very good if you bought crysis special edition for £215 as they will use £215 as the purchase price and you are allowed to keep the game.

With some sites (taken down now) showing the new GTS on pre-order (albeit not EVGA) for £199, if you bought the crysis EVGA GT you might be able to swap it for an EVGA GTS for just shipping cost.

Other bonus with EVGA is their warranty allows overclocking and replacement of stock cooler which is the only manufacturer to do so as far as I'm aware.

Really?

I didnt know they don't put their latest cards in the step up programme. That was partly the reason I chose the brand. Very disappointing.:(

That's right. Easyrider was having a total stress this time last year trying to get EVGA to swap his 7950GX2 for an 8800GTX and they were basically saying that it wasn't on the list, so tough luck.

I'm not sure how/if he got it sorted but he did end up with an 8800GTX in the end.

Someone posted on here a while ago that they tried to use the eVGA steup and in the uk unless you buy your card from one of their listed system builders you don't qualify for step up don't know if this is true or not.

When I bought my EVGA ACS3 KO 8800GTS 640 I qualified for the step up.

Not listed system builders but "approved suppliers". All that means is somewhere like ocuk. The listed system builders applies to buying a complete pc with an EVGA in it. A bit mean to exclude them from step up but they make the rules and I guess that won't apply in your case as you are just looking at buying the card?

It excludes all auction sites (even if the card is new) and dodgy foreign retailers and also excludes if you bought from a legit us supplier and had it shipped over here.

EDIT: Also not every card is available in the step up program. Special editions ( I presume black pearl water cooled qualifies as that) or cards in initial high demand and short supply are excluded initially from the step up program. However, EVGA had 8800 GT's available for step up at launch (although you had to wait for stock, but they logged the date of application and so long as that was within 90 days you were fine) and people who had bought a 8800 GTS 320Mb in the last 90 days could step up for just the shipping cost since the GTS cost them more than EVGA were selling their GT cards for so a good deal for a change.

Ahh, that would be why he was a bit dismissive of the step-up programme when I mentioned I was gonna get the Evga.

Guess I'll wait and see what happens when the 9 series arrives, which is why went with them.
