Anyone fancy a Spitfire?

Is there a blog or twitter to follow on this?

There's a Twitter account, but I unsubscribed after they kept repeating the announcement of finding the crate about 20 times in a few hours, with just a link to a different news site on each tweet. I kept thinking they'd found something else new but it was the same first crate news each time. :(

They won't find anything usable if they find anything at all. Those crates wouldn't have been air or water tight.

You'd be surprised.

Being coated in the corrosion inhibitor they had back then is a pretty damn good start. Look at what aircraft reasonably regularly get pulled out of the ground in many pieces and rebuilt to fly.

There's was a restoration place nearby that had a couple of airframes that were pulled out of a forest in Russia, been there for years. Rain, snow, ice, rotting tree material.

One of them flew a couple of years ago after a long rebuild, and was in excess of 90% original. Original guns *deactivated*, original radios, original instruments... Even the original bulb in the gun sight. They even discovered that the cause of the accident wasn't battle damage, but sabotage. There were some rags stuffed into oil lines which caused the engine to overheat *to the point that it was scrap - temps got to high that the engine was bright blue inside*

I really hope they find something, How can he have researched for 17 years and not found a thing ?

They must be pretty sure there is something there somewhere to spend all that money to go searching !

Hopefully they keep looking and find something, if only for the awesome TV documentary series that could be created of the dig/discoveries/restoration.

[GD Mode]Maybe, they did find something, but not what they expected... Rumours floating around suggesting they've uncovered a crashed alien spaceship with some surviving crew. Full on conspiracy and our Government is definitely involved.[/GD Mode] :D

They'll probably find something buried by a GDer. My bet is on a Lego plane. :D

Hopefully we're just pretending that there are none there so that we don't have to give half of them to Burma who will probably recycle them.

Seems to be a lot of conflicting reports about this.

Also read they have found a number of crates but there are power cables running above them so it will be some time before they can excavate them.

The Times have reported that they abandoned the search of the Rangoon site but are now expected to go to another one for further excavation.
