Just have a quick go with http://www.netdimes.org
It take naff all cpu power, just a bit of bandwidth.
Stats at http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=team&proj=dimes&team=OcUK+-+Overclockers+UK
teamdaily1.php

I'm confused. How do I contribute, and if it isn't cpu based, then what does it use?

There doesn't seem to be a x64 linux client, will this run well enough to be worthwhile on a netbook? Seems possible if it just burns through bandwidth.

Installation fails on ubuntu netbook remix with "Dependency is not satifiable: libstdc++5 >= 1:3.3.4-1". Not sure I'm going to be able to run this, I don't have windows available.

It just runs a trace on a random IP address just to see where it goes, at most every 15 second up to whatever delay you set it at. It won't use huge chunks of bandwidth!
A netbook would be fine if it has a permanent internet connection.
Download a suitable agent from http://www.netdimes.org/new/?q=node/10
Then join team OcUK - Overclockers UK when you activate the agent.

I can't get this to run under 64 or 32 bit ubuntu, or under wine, or under xp in virtualbox. I think each one has a different problem but don't really know how to solve any of them.

While I'd like to help, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to.

I've only ever run it on XP pro, it just works on that so I have never needed to fix it I'm afraid. Any hints in their FAQ or forums?

I installed this last night (on an XP Pro machine). It didn't seem to be doing anything useful and both UDP and ICMP connections appeared to be blocked, so I uninstalled it.

However, I've got some stats through this morning, so have reinstalled it and will run it for the time being at least, although I haven't the faintest idea about what it does or hopes to achieve :p

I have this running on my laptop. I almost gave up too. The client is the biggest pile of useless unintuitive crap I have ever come across in distributed computing.

The first install attempt didn't appear to do anything. I tried opening the client and it wouldn't show me anything. I'd get the UAC prompt and then nada.

One reinstall later I finally got to see the client so registered my details. I was then sat there wondering if it was working. The messages were saying host unreachable, but this didn't really say a lot to me. I thought it was normal considering it was mapping the Internet, it is bound to hit a few dead ends.

After some idle reading I found in the properties a little test to see if your ports were blocked. 1 minute later it comes back red. Oh. Half an hour screwing around with the firewall later I turn the bloody thing off. Yay it works.

That was way, way too much effort. I would have prefered a console/command line client since all it appears to be is a glorified tracert script. They could have offered a GUI addon separately if you really wanted to see all the nodes etc.

They are already on shaky ground as to whether the project is even doing anything worthwhile and making their client a complete ballache to install is not helping them any. "It works fine on XP" is ludicrous these days. Vista has been out for years and years and Windows 7 is also 3 months old - there is no excuse!

I never mentioned any earth shattering results but then neither has seti and I spent a great deal more time and money on that.
I was only aiming to get a bit more activity and pirate baiting used to be good for a laugh, I wasn't expecting such a negative response :( I can't afford a fresh copy of windows 7 ultimate on a I7 extreme.
Maybe that's why this team is kind of petering out, I did this for fun and it doesnt seem to be here anymore.

Sorry, wasn't meaning to be negative at all, was just wondering if I'd set everything up right :)

Let's stomp those pesky pirates (again)! Arrrrrrr!

Yeah everyone with your negative vibes man :D, well i think i have it running (dunno how to check don't want to sod it up :p)
Although fahmon in my VM has decided to go all hung :(

I had another go at installing it and it installed ok but have been unable to get it to run.
anyone else here with win 7 managed to get this to run on thier pc.

I had to completely disable Windows Firewall to get it to run. The automatic "Ahh! Something new is trying to use teh Intawebs, should I let it????" dialog in Windows 7 didn't make any difference to giving it access, and manually adding and allowing DelayedStart.exe [or whatever] plus a bunch of Java VM exes in the firewall didn't work either.

I didn't want to sound negative towards you dio. I was just flabbergasted as to how utterly horrifying it is to install given it isn't doing anything particularly complex. Just sits there looking ugly! :p

I plan to leave it running - at least until my next nuke which is probably due rather soon. I think the HDD in my laptop is dying :( - I am just not happy with the experience so far!

Maybe stomping some pirates would lighten my mood regarding DIMES!

I don't know - all these people leaving XP for something younger... shameful ;)

Have DIMES installed as a service, so I'll see what becomes of that. Seems to be working fine so far.

I'm having trouble running dimes, it installs but then nothing comes up. (win7) 32bit. Anyone managed to get it working?

Real shame if I cant as well because the bandwidth and ping here is awesome..

Sorry SiriusB, I seem to have stomped you at some point without issuing a parp. Bad form on my behalf :o

In other news, worringly I'll be stomping Russian_Hitman within the next 24 hours

This is starting to annoy me now.

I cannot get either UDP or ICMP unblocked, resulting in my DIMES client being unable to receive any data from any hosts it contacts - which presumably means it's not benefitting DIMES. I've tried getting my router to allow incoming UDP (no option for ICMP), which doesn't work (unless I'm putting in the wrong LAN server IP address, which is possible as I don't know what that should be :o) and I've disabled Windows Firewall (which I know I don't need to have enabled because my router has a built-in firewall, but it stops Windows from moaning), which doesn't help matters either. I've changed the default protocol to UDP in the DIMES client, which also doesn't help.

Am I missing something simple or will my router - a Netgear somethingorother that came courtesy of Sky Broadband - just not allow inbound traffic no matter what I try?
