What is it like?

I am possibly moving that way in the near future and was wondering where is good or bad, and generally what its like :)

It's a nice city but I wouldn't want to live there. It gets a bit much after a couple of weeks and the night-life is almost non-existant. The area itself though seems very nice.

I think Beansprout is from Bath, he'll probably give you a better, if slightly bias opinion :p

Why does it get a bit much?

I'm not overly fussed about nightlife being a sad git but surely it canne be that bad with a university in the area?

I live close-ish to there and all I can say about it is that it has a kick arse guitar shop.

'Vintage & Rare Guitars' - I mean.. That name screams quality. Be sure to check it out if you play guitar.

My Dad was working up there for a bit so I've been up a number of times.

Absolutely beautiful city, a very affluent area but... the traffic is, literally absolutely apalling.

It can often take over half an hour to drive the 3 miles into the city centre. It really is that bad, and very stressful. I don't think I could live there for that reason alone. Shame, becuase of the rest of the city is absolutely lovely.

The university seemed quite closed off, the night-life, or at least what I saw of it was rubbish.

The city is lovely, but after a while you feel like screaming to get away from the bathstone. Bath has a very complicated relationship with city planning, so I suppose it does make it very individual but it has come at a price as it makes it difficult to develop and such.

Hmm, i dont play the guitar but thanks for the tip! :p

Fox - I've had traffic probs before when passing through so i'll have to bear that in mind.

I'll be moving for work reasons as their HQ is there and that is where i *hopefully* will be based.

Have you looked at property prices there? They're hyper expensive.

Yes, I shant be buying cos i cant so rental only.

Thing is if i do get this job, and i hope i do i will have no choice as the commute from Poole to Bath takes about 2+hours each way and would kill me in both time, energy and money.

Are there any towns/villages local to bath that are cheaper or worth looking at?

Well I'm a student at Bath uni and while the night life isn't great, the city is lovely. I've always found that it's the company that makes a night out rather than the location. While there are quite a few nice pubs, the clubs are lacking a bit so us students tend to go to the same places. You will also find that some nights will be busier than other depending on what clubs nights are on and what's going on at the unis (yes there are 2). As fox said the traffic can be very bad, with some places being always busy no matter what the time of day.

Suits me fine, being neither a student nor a student "lover" its good to know you keep yourselves confined to certain areas :p

Traffic could be a problem but i'll have to drive because a) i like driving, and b) i need my car for work being out on site and at clients premises a fair bit.

Well we're not that confined :p , however obviously students tend to go to the cheaper places to drink. Apart from that beware of going shopping on Saturdays as it can get very busy.

Not really into shopping either!!! :p

As long as i find a place with a garage (yeah right!) then that is where i will spend my weekends working on my project :)

Hey :D

I live in salisbury which aint far from bath (been there a few times) seems to be a reasonable place so if you end up moving there i hope its what your after

Is there anything you specifically want/need Bath to have as a place to live? Seeing as your not that bothered about clubs/pubs or shopping feel free to ask about anything you would want Bath to have.

I dont really know!

Sounds daft but i'm not sure what i want a place to have, i've lived down on the south coast for 12+ yrs, i the home counties for 10yrs before that and up in the midlands for a few years too! Pretty varied and they all have their own good and bad points.

The main factor for me is work, however if i move it will be solely because of a new job.

My only living requirements are low crime, particually theft/car crime as i dont wish my insurance to go sky high, ruralish is nice as i like countryside but dont object to town centres as long as i'm not kept up til the small hours by drunk louts - a pet hate of mine! A garage would be excellent but bath doesnt seem to have places with garages!

Thought of a few Q's for anyone in bath...

Whats the crime like?
What are the amenities like, is there a sports centre, cinema and stuff like that?
Do you have wheelie bins?
Do people take pride in the area and give a dam or is it not that kinda place? (i'd imagine it is)

Crime rate is below average, at least that what it says here: http://www.upmystreet.com/local/police-crime/l/Bath.html
I know of at least 1 gym in town and you can always sign up to the universities big sports centre, which isn't too far from the centre (about 5 mins drive). Google is your friend with this one.
With regard to bins I believe you have to provide your own (at least where I live).
Generally Bath is quite a tidy place and I'd day the residents keep good care of there homes. Obviously this does depend on where you live as not everywhere is nice. Oldfield Park is the big student area where the houses are cheap/cheaper so I'd keep away from there if possible (for your interests).

I live in a nice suburban area up by the university which is fairly quiet and most of the houses have garages. However, property isn't cheap and I don't know whether the location would be ideal for you - depends where you work I guess.
