I seen all the benchmarks, average mid-range lappy gpu. But would be good to hear some real-world experiences of using this chip at a 1080 res.

Would it be reasonably future-proof (if gaming at medium + native res) for the next year and a bit?

I had a 540m before I bought my MBP.

Its not a bad card, but don't expect to be playing FPS' at 1080p! I overclocked mine to approx 800gpu/1000mem I think (sorry it was a while ago). and I could play the following at 1080p:
SC2 with a mix of medium/high
DOW2 High
SupComm2 medium

For BFBC2, COD BO and Shogun 2 I had to drop the res to 900p to get decent fps'

Thanks :D. That's a bit disappointing then - BC2 and shogun I play a lot at the moment. Was considering an XPS 15 but looks like that's a bit out of the question then.

Yeah thats what i had. You need the 1080p screen if you buy it as the default screen is terrible.
Have you considered the xps17? The 555m option is a lot better, 50% more shaders and 50% higher memory bus. Makes a big difference for playing at higher res.
I have an ati 6750 in my mbp and i can game at 1080p on bfbc2, shogun2 and cod bo. The 555m looks slighly better spec wise

Well if you need it to be portable then i wouldnt recomend the xps range at all. They are really bulky.

The 6750 is an amzing card. Stock clocks are 600/800 ddr5 and i ovclock to 800/1000 and also undervolt it. I play most games at 1200p as i own the 17".
I never understand these heating problems. If you manage the fans yourself it runs great.
In bootcamp i run the fans at 4200rpm which is a great mix of cooling yet not too loud.

Looked at your other thread and see you are looking at the clevo. Couple of points.
1. The 555m in the clevo is only 128bit bus not a 192 bit bus like in the dells so it wont be so good at high res.
2. The keyboard isnt the best on clevo laptops. It will be a big downgrade from your vaio.

That said the cooling is normally great on clevos and they also have great screens unlike the stock dell screens.
Ps, i really wanted to get the vaio z but the 330m put me off. Check out the vaio sb. 13" with ati 6630 and similar build quality to the z. Screen is only 1366 though, is that no good?

6630 doesn't seem so much better than a GT330M, though the res is lower! Thanks...will look into it :). Nice info about the Clevo. I'll look into some laptop specific benchmarks at 1080p.

You also have me seriously considering a MBP 15 now, but I'll need to find a second hand one. Even with a student discount they're asking waaay too much.

I guess bulk doesn't matter so much. I'm a student atm but travelling on various rotations in different cities so like to have a gaming laptop with me. Will probably be more weekend trips with laptop + charger in the backpack so weight is more important.

Muchas Grassyass anyhow :)!!!
