I'm looking for a decent tailor in Leeds for this summer, but that's not what this threads about, but if anyone can recommend then that'd be great. Anyways, do you get any of your shirts, trousers etc tailored/altered after you've bought them?

I'm starting to buy more clothes online at the moment for a more varied range. Basically, last time I went into Leeds, I walked into a high street retailer and saw a sales assistant wearing the same polo, shorts and shoes as me from the big few; River Island, Topman and Burtons. While I love the fit of the small River Island shirts; seeing people in the exact same clothes made me want to expand my tastes, and also sort out what I've currently got (used to buy clothes bigger than I needed).

Just asking, does anyone regularly go to the tailors? What's an acceptable going rate per item?

I normally go to Berwin and Berwin on Roseville Road. I don't normally alter shirts, but trousers sometimes get altered slightly. I think I paid about £20 last time I did a shirt, and it's normally about £15-20 on trousers, depending on what I get done. They fit much snugger afterwards :)

big popular chains = cheap mass produced clothing = everyone has it.

Generally speaking i don't alter any clothes unless i cant find it in my size and really want it.

You definintely want trousers altering though, many places dont seem to provide many choices for the leg length and you definitely dont want them to drag along the floor. I'd imagine that you should be able to find the right size for shirts straight off the rack though

Leeds is also pretty damn good for clothes

Made to measure shirts are wonderful! And suits and blazers and slacks! There was a time before I had a wife and children and when I lived in Hong Kong when all my clothes (other than jeans etc.) were made to measure, ah! happy days!

The suit trousers I buy come unfinished anyway, so that sorts out the leg length problem.

As for the jacket, I buy off the peg along with the trousers, but only ever the same brand as I've so far only found one make that fits me. I think with jackets you are best to find one that pretty much fits as soon as you start mucking around with it too much you lose the original shape.

Got my mum to alter my trousers once (not sure if that counts)

tbh.. if you're after more variety go to a charity shop (I know it sounds a bit chav-ish & there will be a fair bit of rubbish but you can get decent stuff in there - got myself a £60 thomas pink shirt for 3 quid in London for example)

I'm looking into getting a tailored suit soon tbh.. though I reckon I'd probably want to spend about a grand or so unless I can catch one of the hong kong tailors who visit the city.

quoted for truth, I just had a huge celar out, and dumped at the local charity shop, around 20 or 30 Thomas Pink shirts, and more than i can remember Charles Tyrwitt Shirts. about 4 or 5 suits which i could not bear to dump. Ranging form Next to M&S to greives and curtis.

There are going to be some well dress tramps out there :)

Are you saying tramps shop at charity shops? Dowie your a tramp ;)

I've bought a couple of things from Savile Row Co. on sale, and a couple of pieces coming from america, and have a couple of pairs of trousers a size too big, and this thread was just to shed light, whether it was worth just buying some new trousers, or having them altered. :)

My clothes are mostly plain in colour, well without ridiculous 'trend styling' like the topman tshirts that change every week or so, I don't like that anymore, and am phasing what I have of them in my wardrobe, I think this summer I'm just going to go through things.

If it costs £5 to have a tshirt altered, then I might as well, as I have many things at least a size too big for me.

Might go charity shop hunting soon.
