Thinking of going to a Sony 55hx853 led from a 40" Sony Bravia LCD few years old now.
Just wondering if the extra size loses any quality due to being the same res.
Mainly watch sky hd and movies 720p/1080p etc no SD at all really.
Cheers
we use a 55" samsung D8000 in the lounge. You shouldn't notice a quality drop due to the panel size increase.
Best thing to do would be to go in to a store and look at some reference bluray on both and decide for yourself. Big John lewis stores would be a good place to have a look.
I can pretty much guarantee you would prefer the 55" panel however.
I look longingly at the 85 inch displays from CES wondering if they will ever come down to mortal-man's prices.
I went from a 42" to a 50" at a 9 feet distance, didn't notice any quality loss with 720p and obviously not with 1080p content. The quality difference between a DVD and 720p became quite obvious though, never noticed it that much with the 42" tv.
im just doing this but form 46" to a 50" as the 55" i got 55st50 was too big overtaking the room, awesome picture Q very very nice, shame so now going to a pana 50GT50 from JL price match, pana store and sonicdirect!
i will be 9ft away too so watching SD was too close and Massive in my face. but 50" would just fine, 46-47" also pretty good but bigger is obv nicer for movies games !!
Just done this after a few days you get used to the size, do not regret it at all.
We had a 40 inch top of the range from four years ago.
The blacks on the 853 are the major improvement . I understand it is being replaced soon.

A 55" screen of good quality should reveal higher detail when watching 1080p in comparison to a 40" screen, so IMO not only will there be no deterioration in picture quality you should infact notice a significant improvement.
I went from 40 to 46 at 6 feet away. Ive now become a complete hd snob, at this distance Sd really is such a noticeable drop. 720p really is the minimum but you do lose the sharpness with a bigger TV (I do prefer a natural image so have my sharpness setting off) but it looks much better than SD 1080p is all good and you notice all the extra detail
