Anyone good with a soldering iron?

I could do that without even thinking about it. It really isn't difficult, I was expecting something a lot finer than that.

Take someone up on their offer from ocuk ;) I would feel cheeky charging you anything over £1 for that job :p however go to a shop and i bet they would want to charge you well over a tenner!

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I've had quotes of £50 - £95 to do it as it would probably need a new connector too. I have zero experience with a soldering iron and no idea how to take the laptop apart (Toshiba)

I work in Warrington so Manchester isn't too difficult or anywhere in Cheshire really.

I also do this day in day out, it bores me.

We charge 2 hours labour for this, as sometimes the jack can be a real pain to get off, especially if we have to strip another machine to get a "good" jack from.

Make sure you have some glue debonder if you try it, some manufacturers glue the solder points, god knows why.

Unfortunately i'm in Cardiff, i'd do it for £25 all in. My company charges £60 ex vat!!! People pay it too, because loads of places just claim they need a replacement motherboard, £60 ex VAT seems a really good deal compared to that I suppose.

Pfff, easy. It can take a while to desolder the dead jack though. What is annoying however, is when you go to the lengths to strip the mobo out of the chassis and solder in a new jack, to find that the problem wasn't the jack, and that infact the mobo has a dead charge circuit.

Some have dead fuses on the board, though can be a right pain to find, you can replace them :) They're surface mounted, just slip off with the touch of the soldering iron. Usually that's the problem when someone's "blown" their laptop if the dc jack seems ok.

Customer came in today with one of those ****** lame universal chargers, the only option on it was to choose the voltage, the ampage was set to 6a! Both laptops he killed the fuses on were only rated at 19v, 3.42a.

Those universal things should be banned.

I know nothing about electrics but wont it only draw the amps it needs?

I know nothing about the theory behind it either, but they do blow.

Stick a 19v, 6.32a psu in a 3.42a laptop and pop.

I thought it was the same as desktop psu's, as in, it'd have max ampage for the rail etc, but i've had quite a few die.
