Ive just taken my 19" apart to see how easy it would be to change the powersupply, and it looks quite easy. The prob is it doesnt like turning on from cold, screen and power led flashes on and off for a good 30sec or so before staying on. It looks easy to replace wouldn't you say guys??

Well I hate to tell you, messing with the power supply you can really break your monitor. You are playing a dangerous game and you will need to replace the Transistor as well otherwise you will break it.

Unless you are good with electronics and can find a new transistor, your efforts will be futile.

Good luck

transistor,, whats 1 of them.. Surely its just a matter of replacing that 1 board?? Also if I do attempt it, how long should I leave it to discharge?

Stop being silly, you do not know what you are doing and are not clued up with electronics. Put it all back together, sell it on ebay and get yourself a new monitor. Hopefully this post will not end up on google rotfl :D:D:D

Well if I do get another faulty mointor to fix my monitor, I think the best thing todo isll let a sparky do the job..

thanks guys, at least now I know its just not a matter of changing that 1 board

I'm all for curiosity and have had my fair share of electric shocks as a result. One of the absolute worst ways to learn electronics is to go poking around switch mode power supplies, doubly so the supplies in LCD monitors.

Consider every part of the yellow pcb in the picture to be potentially lethal. The input is at a very unhealthy 240 volts and in common with most switch mode power supplies you can expect to find twice that voltage running around the board - even after the power has been disconnected! Please note the heatsinks, large bits of metal sticking up from the board, are probably live and dangerous. As the board supplies the backlight, the connectors on the left could be carrying around 2,000 volts (yes, two thousand).

Still interested? One of the best places I've found to learn about electronics is here:

I am in no way connected with Rod Elliott or his site. He is well respected, experienced and always considers safety first.

Phil ignore them mate .. what they think is a tranny joining is just a plug joining the 2 boards . You dont need to be an electronic engineer to replace one board (just look at 95% of computer engineers ) .

From the photos you have it looks like the caps are starting to expand which is causing yer bad cold starting .
If you can get another old monitor it would be a 5 min job to replace the board... Otherwise its off to a tv type repair man but its a simple repair and should only cost a few quid .

And re the last post there is a lot of voltage on the board but if turned off and allowed to drain it will be safe to work on in 24 hrs .

Persil

Most definitely not a tranny ;)
What wants replacing is the whole inverter board (I.E. The whole cream PCB; Replacing the caps as per the post above would work too). Simple job really, just need to take basic precautions; Leave the monitor off & unplugged for 24 hrs, and then press the power button a few times. Other than that, don't stick your fingers/ screwdriver into anything :p

The part number for the inverter board I believe is:
FSP035-1PI01

Let me know how you get on mate. I've got a VX922 which is holding up but my VX912, like yours, has the same problem and I've sent it off for a private repair and it's not looking good to be honest. :(

ummmm,, I might have ago, or might let a sparky do it. anyway if I do it and when I switch it on, I will do it outside and use a long wooden stick incase it goes bang.:D

Today Ive got a 2nd hand vx912 monitor for £5.50 and its in perfect working condition with no scratches or anything. So Im using my faulty 19" as the 2nd display, so yeh I either want to get it fixed or see if I can find myself another bargin.. Question for you tho, If I carry on using the monitor with the faulty psu, will it eventually go bang? Like I will only be using it for refering from and watching tv when Im working on my main display, 2 screens come in sooo handy for that. Plus my system it looks real smart with 2 screens the same.. here a pic guys. if you havent seen it in the case thread..... The faulty screen is on the right.

Yeah I will let you know. I guess it must be a common prob with the VX912 if your having the same prob.

Edit: How old is yours, mines was 4yrs november, basically I got mine within week of it being released, and it was a awsome monitor. If I remember rightly ocuk sold more vx912s then any other monitor. It still is a awsome monitor today for build quality and the picture quality is loads better then on my 5month old 20" widescreen, but that was just a little over £100

I now want to know where you got a monitor like that for £5.50!
The auction site......The fool wanted pickup only, so no one bidded for it, so got a real bargin cos Ive seen them go for about £70. When I bought the monitor from new 4yrs ago from ocuk, it cost me a little over £400.

Was he really upset when you picked it up from him?

The colours look a bit more vibrant on the left screen, is it configured differently?

Someone else picked it up for me, but I think he was ok, he even chuked in a fellows monitor stand too

The panel must be a newer version then mine or my screen has warn out, cos if I set both the monitors the same, my old screen prduces durtier whites and the new screen produces whiter whites and brighter colours, so I had to change my old monitor from sRGB to 9300k and tweak the ati colour so the 2 screens roughly look the same.
The buttons on the new screen are slightly harder to press and dont wobble as much as my buttons on my old screen. So Im guessing it hasnt been used much.

Ive taken 2 pics with out the flash to show you the diff, but they haven come out to great

with all settings the same on both screens.

With the settings tweaked diff on both screens to try to get them looking the same, but still the new screen is stll slightly brighter

If I make the old screen any brighter using the ati control panal, the white goes durty like in the first pic.
