Anyone got a Garmin 7 Series - You better read this quick...

I hate Garmin sat navs, my Garmin constantly recalculates routes while driving around and shows me driving a long different roads. The other day it was showing me entering a roundabout while I was driving a long the M40 . Then it takes 10-15 minutes to find satellites, if it even does.

The Garmin GPS models impacted by the firmware glitch include the nüvi 7x5 series, the nüvi 800 series, the nüvi 8x5 series, the zümo 660, and the GPSMAP 620 and 640.

If you can turn it on for long enough when you get it - make sure you goto Garmin, get the webupdater and get the newest firmware. It will save all the rubbish I had to go through this afternoon (as well as invalidating the warranty) - What a disaster for them.

No sure what to do now ...

I need it for a biking holiday in france in about 10 days time.

Is this quote below true ??
The worst part about all this is if you update the infected unit to version 3.60, it may fix the GPS acquisition issue but it causes the unit to keep telling you the battery level is low and the image of the battery shows zero when it is fully charged.

I don't know what has happened to Garmin, they used to produce fantastic, high quality GPS devices but seem completely to have lost the plot; I would avoid them like the plague nowadays :(

I work in Halfords, and here's my personal view *prepares for flamage*.

I would always recommend a Garmin over a TomTom. I have a small glimpse into the reliability of these things, and we recieve a lot of TomToms that are faulty (which we have to return to TomTom). I barely see a Garmin with an issue. Also with TomTom if there is an issue they make us tell the customer to go back and try this and that for about 4 weeks before FINALLY they tell us to send the unit back. However, the Garmin policy is exchange for a new one, every time. No matter what the issue.

I have seen the issue you have described. As you said, embarrassing for Garmin to say the least! But thats nothing to dealing with the irate customers :( To go against what i said before, recently i have never seen so many returned Garmins! I asked the boss what was wrong and it was all the same. Bricking after the "GPS Update message".

Garmin are otherwise good in my opinion, but this is shocking. The fact they release a fix that carries its own problems is nothing short of stupid!

Have you considered that you may get more faulty TomToms because they are more popular than Garmins? Just a thought.

I got the tomtom One IQ the other month....had no issues with it at all. Actually made some of my journey times shorter as it takes me routes I would never have thought of taking or down roads I didn't know existed lol :).

What I find really strange is that they....

1.) Failed to have a workable reset button on their device. The "Hold the power button" for 15 seconds didn't work in this scenario.
2.) A sealed unit means warranty is now useless.
3.) I had to search deep into their help / support to find what I had to do (even though it has already affected thousands) - It should have been on their homepage for gods sake.
4.) Even then - the help / support basically said " If it doesn't turn on - RMA it" - so effectively all the customers who couln't turn it on would be without it for weeks over the summer.
5.) No - it wasn't freepost - and they would only fix units still under warranty  so any device that Garmin bricked with their Frimware out of Warranty is useless unless you pay a hefty fee for fixing - Effectivley they have washed their hands of it even though they were totally responsible for it (by suggesting you install previous firmware)
6. In the end I fixed it myself - and invalidated the warranty the same as hundred of others.

It's not as if this was some homebrew firmware - It was Garmins own sofware so they should take full responsibilty for all this & be bending over backwards for customers caught out (even those out of warranty)

Purely as a matter of interest, have you actually been able to contact Garmin?

I filled in the RMA form 2 days ago with no response yet.

But as I've fixed it myself already it doesn't really matter now - as I needed it urgently.

They are saying their turnaround for RMA items is usually 2 weeks from when they receive it - so realistically it would have been away for about a month (seeing as there are hundreds being sent back)
