Anyone got a Hive motion sensor?

Following my other thread about my Xiaomi lights dying, we’re now looking at getting a set of bulbs to replace them.

I see Hive supports Hue, but do you need the Hue bridge (hub?) as well? Just wondering if we can get Hue bulbs without needing another hub thing.

We’ll probably just get some Hive bulbs to be honest- but Phillips do do the filament style ones..
I'm not sure. I have all the hubs lol

Hive is for heating. They've already turned their back on most non heating related things. Just buy Hue and do it properly. You understand Philips are like the number 1 market leader in lighting? They actually research and develop the stuff rather than package up tat from China.

You don't need a Hub for Hue to work, it just makes it infinitely better.

I think the newer hue bulbs also had Bluetooth connectivity for those who didn't want a hub.

At this point if you're looking to add more smart tech you'd be better off looking at something open source like home assistant where you can control everything under a single service.

Agree and disagree - Home Assistant is still marginally unstable/a dash unfriendly for everyday/solitary use IMHO. The good news is, Hue works with HA perfectly. So have both!

Both Hive and Hue are Zigbee, but Hive for whatever mad reason are a closed system, you can't add non-hive devices to it.
You can connect your Hive setup to a Hue setup, but you need both Hubs. And then you fall down the rabbit hole of trying to get Alexa to control them, and not have 3 different devices all claiming to be Sitting Room Lights.

I have both, as I got Hive lights after we got Hive heating. Later I started getting Hue because when Black Friday rolled around the cost of Hue vs Hive bulbs for elsewhere in the house was so much better.
If I had the choice now I would have gone Hue lights from the start. So much simpler.
Ikea also do some Hue / Zigbee compatible stuff. Plus there are all the Sonoff units you can get to retrofit to existing lights.

Lets not talk about the LightwaveRF stuff I started with... :D

My Hive app shows all my Hue lights? And i can build automation for them with the Hive Motion sensors. Not sure why you think you cannot add non Hive devices?

Actually the beauty is that you can make it as basic or as advanced as you need. There are auto-dash add-ons that will build a functioning dashboard.

So if focus is purely functional then it would satisfy those requirements. But yes you can get so much more out of it with a more advanced setup.

Hmn I read they turned their back and discontinued security stuff like video doorbell, locks etc. Unclear if they're still really working on and promoting lights etc. Their pet-friendly sensor looks relatively new to me (and smaller than the rather lame-looking Phillips one!)

But you have the bridge right?

This is all about laziness. I don't like creating more accounts than I need. If I can do what I need without having to get another account then it's tempting. I do understand Phillips is the market leader but yeah.. not another flippin' account! I do see Amazon have a Prime day coming up on 10th Oct though..

Someone mentioned Home Assistant which I like the idea of playing around with (mainly to turn on my porch light when my new Reolink doorbell detects motion).. but the reality is my home automation stuff is going to be limited. I'm not going to be replacing all the lights in my home. In fact, probably 5-6 max as table lamps (sort of thing). We don't actually ever put big lights on, we prefer cosy lighting :) And my other half will never let me put sensors everywhere (and actually I wouldnt want to)

Out of all the home automation gimmicks I've bought - the Hue setup is the best, hands down. I put off buying a Hub but just bit the bullet (bought it off of a lad on here). Regarding your account issue, it does support Apple/Google ID login.

Home Assistant is brilliant for tinkering but some of the advanced things (like doorbell turning the porch light on) may be a bit trickier. Not sure if Reolink provides access to the Motion detection API.

Hive is just a startup that has been acquired and butchered by British Gas. I would never put more eggs in that non-descript basket - but that's me. I think @jonneymendoza actually used to develop for them...

I do view Hive as a bit butchered and "touristy" but I guess what I'm saying is, this is literally only for 4-5 bulbs, mainly just on timers. Probably not even that. It's a small house :p

Well in that case do it cheaper and go Hue and just use Bluetooth :D

Not sure how they are now as everyone I knew already left there but when I was there we was basically like a startup developing smart thermostat.

They shouldn't be a startup anymore though?

They should be well fully established!

I don’t suppose anyone that uses Hive Actions with a Hive sensor could tell me if the sensor can brighten a light that’s already on, then revert to the low light rather than turning it off?

We leave our porch light on 10% or something at night. So if I buy a sensor I’d like it to brighten for XX seconds, then revert to 10%. I suspect Hive actions are not clever enough for this?

Otherwise I may wait until I get Home Assistant up and running, and just use the Reolink doorbell sensors. Thanks.

They can, I have internal ones doing that with smart bulbs, but it’s not bullet-proof in terms of reliability so I’d probably take your suggested route instead. Home assistant will be more flexible.
