I use my computer a lot whilst the room light is off (because my wife is asleep), and i think this is putting quite a strain on my eyes.

I could obviously get a normal desk lamp but i dont really have any spare plug points. Therefore i was considering one of the cheapo usb desk lamps.

Does anyone have one?

i was wondering how powerful a light they produce?

My girlfriend has a small usb plug in one that is on a bendy arm and Led at the end, assume thats the type you mean? Its enough to shed some light on the keys so you can type, but not much else. Again not sure if thats what you mean by a "lamp"

USB ports dont output enough juice to power a half decent lamp. Like the above it can only power a lamp that can output enough light to light up a small surface area.

expect a LED soldered up cheaply.

i have a glitter lap that illuminates my room but that's got a heating light to make all the bits move.

if you want a realistic idea of how bright it will be, take a look at your case power light.

my step son has a 12inch lightsaber that is powered by a usb port and its pretty damn bright but they arent cheap.

they have a chargeable battery aswell so you can pull it off the stand and act like your a jedi which looks really good in the dark

I got a couple. Novelty wore off in under 10 seconds.

They are fine for lighting up teh keyboard, but to be honest with you... they are not worth the effort.

I used to have an LED one on a bendy arm, I pointed it upward to illuminate the room (this was on uni halls so quite a small room) I used to use it for mood lighting ;)

It wasnt overly bright but gave enough light to see what was going on, I wouldnt want to work at the light level though.

I got one and it is not the led [dots]. It is a strip like a flourescent tube. Bought it from a computer fair a few years back. Can take a pic later on.

I use it for the purpose you mentioned.

I never understood the fascination with small desktop items that were powered not by battery or mains but by USB.

I agree...

What can you get now? Little Keyboard hoovers FFS, face cooling fans, lights as we are talking about, hell, I have even seen a drinks cooler box powered off USB... Come on!

The junk that they have come up with is almost worthy of a post on its own, but Im not going to start that one... Im not that sad.

I have a Luxeed keyboard. It's lit up, each key assignable to a different colour :-)

IT was to save the use of a plug socket!

By the time I have PC, monitor, speaker, printer, router, alarm **** etc plugged in to my multisocket i dont have any spare plug sockets.

Therefore if i could have powered a little lamp via usb, it would have been quite handy.

However, I have been persuaded against it by the comments in this thread. I think i will unplg the printer and use a real lamp.
