Anyone had to do this? Wondering whats the best value form of commuting to the Isle of Wight from the mainland , say for arguments sake, Portsmouth. The job would require mobility on the island too, so ideally a car would be involved. Anyone got ideas on the rough costs involved? Better to go over on foot ferry and keep a secondary car based on the island and my main car on the mainland? Or better to take the main car over? Would the costs involved be so high as to make the whole idea a waste of effort?

My father in law did this for a while before moving to the IOW. If I remember correctly, the cheapest method he found at the time (about 2007/8) was via Red Funnel from Southampton. IIRC the ferries take longer, but are cheaper than those from Portsmouth.

What he said, a monthly season ticket with your car on Red Funnel is £188, last time I went from Portsmouth -> Ryde on foot it cost 8 quid both ways.
