I need to set up a home office with a desk capable of taking a couple of monitors and a laptop. I'm looking at the Ikea MALM desk in brown stained ash veneer.

I appreciate it's a budget desk but the size and style are right. I just wonder if anyone has this and how they find it before I pull the trigger and buy it.

Ta.

The wood is hollow with cardboard honey comb. I had it, put my tv on it and you could see the bend. You might not get it with this as the back support goes to the top. I drilled a circular hole in mine and put a USB hub / cable tidy in.

i have the desk and for me its perfect.

rock solid with a nice support bar at the back of the desk along with cable tidy.

cupboard section si quite deep.

overall would highly recommend it to anyone

how did u manage to get it to bend. the section that is unsupported isnt long enough to bend even with my 20 stone figure sitting on it regularly:confused:

Just as a different option

I have the "LINNMON" corner desk (£35) with a short desk (£5) attached to create a kind of L-shaped design. With this you can customise the legs you have - I went for height adjustable legs (£10 each but non-height adjustable are £2.50 each). I then stuck two of the lockable ERIK filing cabinets underneath (£45). I think it is a decent setup, however as said above the centre is hollow honeycomb structure. I haven't seen any bending in mine and I have a 42" plasma in the corner section.

EDIT: Prices are for white which is the cheapest but can be had in other colours etc...

That looks good sbi5ar. Looks really low though?

I had a malm. plenty strong enough. Didnt fit with the decor when i moved though, now got an IKEA THYGE http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/office-desks/thyge-desk-white-silver-colour-spr-89110934/.

I would say the finish on the malm is the weakest point. by the time mine was replaced, the veneer on the front edge was wearing away and the front and top pieces had separated. It also changed colour, loads lol. I dont think that will be much of an issue with a darker veneer however.

Lol, you're chancing it. 50kg max load on the MALM. Mine you, that's the newer malm with the cable tidy on the back (and no center support for the top). My MALM didnt have that, it had a metal support that ran diagonally from the middle of the left leg to the centre of the top.

I have the same set up (desk wise) in my spare room, quite happily supports my 2 monitors on the corner section, i didn't go for the adjustable legs so the whole thing cost less than 50 quid and it will accommodate me on my pc and my gf on a laptop at the same time.

I have one in the pine colour, I find it a very sturdy item to be honest, it's pretty heavy. I certainly struggled getting it from the shelf and in the car alone! :D

I have a 27" monitor, 17" monitor and Corsair 240 case on it. There isn't loads of room left though.

I wouldn't have said it feels like a 'budget' desk at all. Well worth the money.

Looks like I'm onto a winner, thanks. I'll go and collect it though, don't fancy the £35 delivery cost!

Looks nice, practically designed but really not very durable (it's made out of paper). Mine developed a sinkhole underneath my keyboard after 10 months of very moderate use. Presumably my furious keyboarding (ahem) was too much for it. Ikea replaced it under warranty and I've had no issues with the replacement thus far.

Why not make your own from a worktop. 100 x better and more stable (providing non crappy legs ofc) and roughly the same price.

You gotta build that flat pack thing anyway so prob easier to screw legs to a nice oak worktop or similar.

I have the Micke without the top part and it's great. Very sturdy, good cupboard that my PC fits into, room for one monitor, mouse and keyboard on the desk (and two small speakers). Two little drawers underneath for paperwork/folders etc. Very happy with it.
