my dad went and bought a range rover 2.5 dhse 2001 from a guy who he seen selling it on ebay, but also piston heads,he travelled from newcastle to london and bought it.He currently drives a 1995 hilux surf 3.0 manual, this range rover he bought is a auto.He got halfway up the country with it ,then says he thinks the gearbox isnt working properly,he says that its very sluggish and going uphill is a nightmare, in his words "it couldnt pull the skin of a rice pudding" when he bought it he said to the guy it doesnt have much power on slopes does it and the guy said its only a 2.5 and its nearly a 3 tonne vehicle. The car is smooth on the flat but any sort of hill the gear box drops to very low gear and crawls uphill, the engine revs are high yet its crawling uphill

Has anyone drove one or owned one and knows if there all like that or do they think this has a problem.

cheers

A 2001 would make it a p38 model would it not? The diesels are a bit slow, primitive by modern standards, and this model of range rover is pretty unreliable too I believe...mostly electrical remains, but not a cheap car to fix!

When your dad puts his foot down on a flat piece of road does it act similarly to as it was going up hill (I.E very high revs but not actually going anywhere)?

Sounds like an issue with the gearbox to me. Not necessarily the end of the world though - Fluid changes can work miracles on dodgy boxes!

dad said he checked gearbox fluid today and said ,he took the cap off to refill and was dry,he put little finger in and was dry,so he topped it up with a bottle of fluid, sure he said 1litre and it took the lot,so it must be running with nothing in it.so his plan is to drain the lot,and change filter and refill

Stuck his finger in?, sre you sure thats not PS or something hes checking mate?
:)

he said there is a cap you take off to fill up fluid in gearbox, and he said there wasnt any fluid on the cap,or anywhere inside,he said he only ran his little finger around the lip inside the hole and was dry,so he filled it up with more fluid and it took a litre

Not heard of a remote reservoir for transmission fluid before. Every car I've ever come across it either can't be checked or has a long dipstick by the bulkhead running directly into the transmission sump.

I think your dad is doing it wrong :(.

This confirms it:

Did you read the full thread you linked to ? As it advises post 2000 models don't have a dipstick and just to fill it up until it flows out the fill hole, so going by the fact the fill hole is bone dry it sounds like it doesn't have enough fluid.

It might sound like knit picking but mentioning 'caps' makes me thinking that he's checking stuff in the engine bay. The filler for the gearbox is going to be physically underneath the car and will have a plug.

What colour is the fluid and what does it smell like?

A diesel auto P38 is never going to be a contender for the land speed record but it shouldn't feel like it's running out of steam up a gradient.

my dad said all the fluids were low in the car, engline oil,and fluid for gearbox,so he filled them but,he said the only way he can explain the lack of power is as soon as it hits any sort of hill, could be a mountain or a small slope, the car drops in power dramaticly and the gears start dropping, yet the engine is at 3k revs, we were told you should get on a flat ,the 0-60 should take about 16 secs to 60mph,we had a test on a road near us and took us atleast 55 secs. When we pull away the engine wants to change gear, but the gearbox is slow to react,it only really reacts when going up hill where it just drops and drops.

Really does sound like a knackered box to me :(.

Like I said earlier my next move would be to flush the box and get some completely new fluid in there.
