Not medical advice thread but wondering if anyone has had it done and what you're experiences were / improvement? I have a deviated septum basically he said.

I really really REALLY don't want to have it done but I cannot breathe through my left side of my nose at all and haven't for around 5 years, it's pretty annoying and got to the stage where I decided I needed to sort it out.

So anyone chime in?

I haven't had it done, but i have rhinitis and my right nostril is pretty much useless. It is noticeably narrower than my left. Its something i would consider, i havent reached breaking point yet.

Have you been given Sprays or anything? I've had some nasonex, which does help in the short term, but its given me no lasting effects.

my left nosril is pretty much closed up.....never knew why, never asked but always wondered. What's the medical term, and should I have it sorted?

very interested in this thread

Why don't you want to have it done? If you're worried about having an operation just man up and do it once you've spoken to the surgeon/doctor/whoever and are aware of the risks.

Never really known why some people are so against surgery, if you need it and it will improve your life/health etc then why not.

No idea of the term, but the ability to breath comes quite high on my list of essential things, so i would defo have it looked at. I went to the GP a month or two ago and was given a spray and some anti-inflammatories. I suppose depending on how bad it is closed, they will suggest different things.

I have had deviated septum for 10 years now. I had operation 3 years ago and it resolved it. Was quite intense for two weeks but it felt 1000 times better afterwards, to remove that pressure on my face was like lifting a weight off my shoulders. Unfortunately it has since reoccurred and now i need another operation :(

I had pressure on my face because the deviation caused the middle part of my noes to touch the other side of the nostril and this put pressure on my noes, eye and so on and leads to headaches and makes me feel nauseas at times when i have had nothing to eat for some reason. Also being unable to breathe through the nossil is highly annoying and causes you to depend on the other nostril which ends up being over used and bleeds and also it expands.

If you have any questions about the operation i can try answer them.

it's been like it since birth, it's never really bothered me

Sent a link to my dad, he had a deviated septum and the operation too - nothing but positive comments from him. Hopefully he'll be along soon with his story!

HI! I had this done in 2006 and afterwards ran the Septoplasty Forum until it died this year. This is a life changing operation given the clear breathing one gets after the operation. That's for the price of some discomfort for a few weeks. I'm still impressed with the results.

Cool so apparently I have a deviated septum, didn't know there was a proper term for it! Thought my nose was just ****ed from years of rugby.

Go to GP let them have a look, can be variety of things such as my septum being crooked and blocking my left side off or nasal polyps.

It can cause problems sleeping etc so go ask them to take a look you'll probably be referred to an ENT.

Mine was from boxing... no surprises really. If I push hard on bridge of my nose to one side all of sudden nasal passage opens up and I can breathe through it. Only way of course to fix it is an operation.

Thanks this is why I have to man up and do it how was the pain afterwards?

Simple answer is because i'm a sissy LOL

That sounds quite a problem mine isn't as bad as that. How long does it take to recover? at least for good portion of the pain to go away?

My reason for having one was from boxing also, was not so bad, recovery was quite quick. Washing out your nose with saline is lousy, but the benefits are worth the small amount of discomfort.

I have a deviated septum too. Very annoying not being able to breathe properly. Went to the doctor about it and he gave me some spray which did bugger all. I'm guessing you have to pay for surgery? Probably quite expensive as well so I'll just put up with it for now. Does drive me insane sometimes though.

Ask for referral to ENT, they will decide whether they should operate or not. Deviated septums can get worse over time too. I think mine has probably why i'm now annoyed with it.

Yea I had it done some years ago, 2 weeks of tampons up your nose but after that all fine and I would urge you to have it done. Knocked out, never felt real pain at any stage during or after and the biggest issue is when they remove the scar tissue which is stinging and concerning due to the method but in fact, again, is not real pain problem.

I do produce lots of, well, snot ever since but take drops when I need to and frankly it is MUCH better after than before. I did it and am happy I did.

I've had it done three times in the past 6 years.

All three times resulted in around a week off work, and some of the most awful crap imaginable coming out of my nose. None of the ops were pleasant and it took a good month or more after each op for it to heal.

The first two ops didn't do too much. I could breathe through both sides for a couple of months before one side became 100% blocked again.

The third operation' around 8 months ago, has been much more successful. One nostril still feels slightly blocked, but only by around 10%. I don't get constant headaches, nor do I wake up gasping for air/ feeling like I'm drowning. Also, when I blow my nose bits actually come out (still makes me happy every time).

Conclusion: Get it done. If it fails first time, get it done again!
