What kind of things did you demonstrate and what kind of tasks did you give them?

Looking for ideas, really. I'm a UI designer/developer for web and mobile applications, there's things I could demonstrate but not really sure about tasks to delegate whilst providing good experience. There's plenty more to do around the offices, account handling etc but when it comes to my role, I'm not sure!

Feel free to chip in and say what kind of work experience you've had!

School work experience, I was unfortunate enough to be stuck in a parts department of a car dealership - day to day was spent mostly lifting doors and car panels into designated bays! :p After school, internship wise, when I went into the agency, I was pretty much left to my own devices because I was clued up on the role.

Can you speak to them in advance and find out what their skills are? They may surprise you with what they can help with. I prefer to try to find a mini project rathetr than something mindless. e.g. some screens for use in a proof of concept or a script to do something to save us time, etc.

Tartan paint & left handed screwdriver ;)

Get then to make brews and assist you where possible. Nothing worse for work exp kids then to be fobbed off with doing pointless crap.

We have them quite often from school/local college, not much we can really get them to do being in a medical field, but basically they just watch consults/surgeries, clean, help out the nurses, fetch things for the vets.

Currently an intern in a marketing agency.

Role includes:
- briefing the studio on creative,
- calling clients and liasing information,
- research,
- digital publishing,
- getting involved and giving my ideas on campaigns in creative workshops,
- also the company i work for has seen my skills in online digital marketing and social media and have clawed onto it as its something they needed revamping and help with as clients are looking more onto that side of advertising now. So im based mainly on that on a day to day basis,

Very much enjoying it though :)

I have various people in. We have some from school work experience (15/16 year olds) and others looking to gain skills in order to find permanent employment (18 - 25 year olds). What I get them to do depends entirely on what they are looking to get out of the experience and the amount of time they are here.

If they are schoolies, then they will shadow various people within my department to give a broad awareness of what is involved for each of the different roles. If time allows, I would set them a project such as designing a new filing model, or looking at space-saving ideas and so forth.

If they are looking for new skills then I will have them trained up - as far as is possible - in one or two roles and let them work as though they were a permanent employee. Clearly, the roles have to be fairly low level since they would only be with us for 3 months but at least they will be doing something purposeful.

We have one at the moment and have had one previously. Both OcUKers. Have given them paid internships helping with research and as they get more comfortable with analysis and more in depth project work (we are economists). It gives us capacity and hopefully gives valuable experience.
