I am in the process of a hardware refresh to replace all the desktops in my business.
Being the Hardware savvy guy i am i suggested we goto new tech and get i5 based SFF from Dell i decided on the Optiplex 980 with an i5 650 CPU (Q57 chip set).
Previously i was going to us an optiplex 780 with a E6500.
Now i am using Dell's imaging product so we can isntall our Windows XP image at factory level and the pcs can be delivered to desk at which point SCCM can get to work on them.
The reason i am not imaging these in house is because a lot of our first and second line support staff were made redundant so we dont have the man power to do so![Roll Eyes  ](/styles/default/xenforo/vbSmilies/Normal/rolleyes.gif)
So i have a base image which works perfectly on the Optiplex 780 dell tout that any image can be given any driver pack and installed on any hardware platform.
I setup the image to work on the 980 i5 system. This is were i start getting issues. The system is unstable. Memory errors loads of DLL related errors when shutting down. Two of our major Apps just shut down when you click OK or CANCEL to any dialog box they throw up, MS outlook is one of these if you close an open email the whole Outlook process dies.
This same image works flawlessly on the 780 core 2 based system.
I Tried installing windows XP from scratch on the i5 based system and installed Dells drivers, manually added it to the domain and started off by manually installing one of the problem apps. The issue instantly occurs.
One of the apps ( a digital dictation app) works fine if you right click run as and put in the details of the User who is already logged in. Admin rights make no difference. The only thing i have noticed about this app is that when you run it without using run as at the point it closes it is trying to run 9 threads. When i do click run as and it doesn't close it never opens more than 2 threads.
Im pulling my hair out over this, we finally have the budget for some 400 new PC's to replace our 5-6 year old estate, i am the one who suggested we use this new tech and we can't get it working. At present out main option is looking to go back and buy 400 core 2 based machines. Which to me seems like a massive waste.
So in conclusion i am pressing Dell for new drivers i can only assume its hardware or driver related and the only people who are going to make drivers i would think would address my issues would be intel.
Has anyone else had any experience with this tech or have anything i could try that i haven't already ?
