anyone had this problem with a ps3 before?

I was gonna say lol, it would seem some people think no backwards compatibilty goes for PS2\PS1 games. It doesnt, all Ps3's play PS1 games. Only 60gb play PS2 games.

Keep phoning Sony, ask to speak to a manager and moan like a woman. I just had them agree to repair my 20 month old laser-failed 40gb for free, they are picking it up on Xmas eve!

The guy there explained to me that all PS3's have 3 laser diodes in them - CD, DVD and Blu-ray. Some use an all in one type device, some use separate ones. When a PS3 fails to read all discs, like mine, it's usually the lens mounting or something similar that fails, not the actual laser(s). If it wont read one type, then a diode has died.

ill give that a go, did they try to charge you the first time you spoke to them too?

Yep, they wanted £99 I think it was to repair or, or something like £130 for a refurbished replacement. Promptly told them where to stick it. Tried again, same thing. Phoned back the next day, spoke to someone else, got a little irate, asked to speak to a manager... they phoned me back the next day and said no problem sir we can do it for free even though about 5 of their staff had already said it's impossible! Win!

They just wanted a copy of the receipt which I faxed through to them. Got a call a few days later to arrange a suitable day to pick it up, Xmas Eve in my case, and to explain it all to me - they will fix it free but if they can't I will get a refurbished replacement free, either way delivered back to my door for free.

The manager guy and the guy that called me the other day were REALLY friendly and nice, unlike the normal staff who seemed like stuck up idiots. So I guess they can do it, they are just nasty!

I doubt it. It's more likely they want people to purchase working consoles new, not broken consoles from friends, in which case they dont see any cash....;)

Malachi said with the cost of a refurb going up to £160 he would buy a slim if his 60GB pack's in...which is what sony want's you to do.

well i called them again and they still said the same thing, they told me a manager could call me back if i wanted but as i bought the console in 2007 they didnt think i would get and more luck with him

i just sold it to my friend for £130 and tomorrow ill add an extra £150 to that and get a bundle that comes with assassins creed 2, call of duty mw2 & a 250gig console so i dont think i did too bad :) those games would cost me about £80 if i bought them so i have added 190gig of space and bought a 12 month warranty for £70
