Hi,
I bought a Sony KDL-40x3000 just before Xmas. It is identical to the x3500 apart from the removable surrounding bezel whereas the x3500 it is a non moveable brushed aluminium bezel (not my taste, besides the x3000 was @£100 cheaper for me).
I spend @10 days researching many TVs to find one that would fill my needs. I needed a TV for the following: 1) double as 2nd PC monitor so 1920x1080 is a must(full HD). 2) Also wanted it for my Xbox 360 so a VGA connection would be a plus. 3) Something that would be able to play HD stuff from both my PC, BlueRay and HD-DVD at full 1080P 4) Needed at least 2 HDMI inputs pref. 1.3 and support 24 frames. 5) Hang on a wall bracket so it is suspended infront of my PC desk above my current Dell 2405WP monitor. So it couldnt be too heavy.
After spending days after day going through reviews/techspecs/prices I decided to buy a Sony kdl-40x3000 at a local shop for £1640 inc. 5 year warrenty.
I'm still in the process of putting it up on the wall bracket but I have spend most of Xmas playing around with this, sofar, wonderful new TV.
Pros: Extremely good 2nd PC monitor, Im so impressed at the 1920x1080 native res of the TV that Im running pretty much all my visuals (DVD, HDDVD, Divx, Xvid & HD movie files like WMV/MKV formats, through the TV and it looks gorgous. I use a DVI - HDMI lead from the 2nd DVI slot of my, also recent purchase, MSI 8800GTS. Once its up on the wall above me Im planning to simply use the vertical extended desktop mode for when I need the extra space, otherwise I just switch between either the Dell or Sony depending on what I want to watch. Already tried Crysis on the Sony and, using the 100Hz montion enhancer, it is simply the most visually stunning game I have seen on a screen (been around since the pong days). Plenty of inputs 3HDMI 2 Scarts 1 VGA-Dsub 1 SVHS 2 Components and each input can have its own settings (it does take a while to sort out the settings, Im still learning about the menu but Im happy with all my settings, used AVforums for suggestions). The Sony also handles my Xbox 360 stuff beautifully, again with motion enhancer, it makes games, Halo3, better then on my Dell monitor. There is 100s of different ways to setup the TV using the menu system, everything is tweakable, although it can be overwhelming at first. Last but not least, it is an extremely good looking TV, just a real pleasure so far in all.
Cons: Normal analogue display, TV SD DVDs etc, is not that good, but comparing it to any other LCDs out there, it still the best, Im pretty happy with it but then again, I hardly ever watch TV. I do however have a vast DVD collection and even with an upscaling DVD player, it is not all that good, it has a hard time with dark scenes, dark shades and esp. dark blues. But again, compared to nearly all other LCDs out there, it still one of the best. If I wanted to go for decent analogue I would have gone for a plasma screen, but they have too many other drawbacks I didnt like. Oddly enough, running my DVDs through the PC and using the DVI-HDMI output, I get a much better result and viewing pleasure in playing normal DVDs then using my upscaling DVD player through HDMI, strange. I also noticed some tearing after experimenting with running some PC games through the Sony. It was only really noticable with fast moving and bright scenes, forinstance, a scrolling landscape while there was thunder and lightning. I owned a ATI X1900XTX before I upgraded to a new MSI 8800GTS and there is definitely a lot less tearing now then before, I hardly notice it anymore. But I do suspect that same problem could occur with 360 games but I have only really played some Halo 3 and that just runs beautifully. No chance of getting it to run properly out of the box, it does take a lot of fiddling with the menu settings till you are happy with what it looks like, but then again, this could be regarded as a plus. Although it could be a bit overwhelming to some but there is plenty of help on the web for the menu settings. I heard a lot of 'clouding' issues with Sony X series on the AVforums, however, apart from analogue stuff and even then its very little once you get the settings sorted out, I did not notice any at all with PC/Xbox and HD stuff. Transformers at 1080P on this screen is just awesome.
Edit: Before I bought this TV, the shop manager was kind enough to setup this TV along side a Pioneer Kuro Plasma, Sony 40W3000 and Samsung(cant remember which but it was the best they had in stock). The Kuro plasmas are still the best at displaying Black levels, no doubt, but then again, when I watched HD content, the X3000 was in a league on it own, even compared to it previous range, the w3000, it looked miles better. It suited my needs, it looked good when doing 1080P stuff and it came with a 5 year guarentee, so now I have one

.
Edit: I have also read on forums that people have had trouble with fan noise from this TV. Well my X3000 is as quiet as church mouse on Sunday. Both my PC and Xbox are louder then my TV, if I switched them off, I cannot hear ANY noise from the TV at all. Even when it was on for @4-5 hours over the Xmas period. Then again, my living room is fairly well ventilated and I keep it cool(ish) 16-20C, depending on the weather.
Right I think I waffled on long enough. I hope that this is of some help to you people but if there are any other questions, I would be happy to try and answer them.
All in all this is, sofar, a fantastic TV for my needs.
Happy New Year.
Cheers
Soya
PS will try and get some pictures but 1) the screen is not yet mounted on my wall bracket yet 2) I dont have a digital camera
