Thinking of buying this TV but looking for some options from anyone who happens to own one.

Particularly interested in Fan noise reported in other forums and Sky SD quality.

Having seen one of these recently sitting beside the new Kuro Pioneer plasma it was very clear that the Pioneer was a lot better. Black Level / Shadow Detail on the Sony were not as good.

Still its a cracking LCD tv though.

Hi,

I bought a Sony KDL-40x3000 just before Xmas. It is identical to the x3500 apart from the removable surrounding bezel whereas the x3500 it is a non moveable brushed aluminium bezel (not my taste, besides the x3000 was @£100 cheaper for me).

I spend @10 days researching many TVs to find one that would fill my needs. I needed a TV for the following: 1) double as 2nd PC monitor so 1920x1080 is a must(full HD). 2) Also wanted it for my Xbox 360 so a VGA connection would be a plus. 3) Something that would be able to play HD stuff from both my PC, BlueRay and HD-DVD at full 1080P 4) Needed at least 2 HDMI inputs pref. 1.3 and support 24 frames. 5) Hang on a wall bracket so it is suspended infront of my PC desk above my current Dell 2405WP monitor. So it couldnt be too heavy.

After spending days after day going through reviews/techspecs/prices I decided to buy a Sony kdl-40x3000 at a local shop for £1640 inc. 5 year warrenty.

I'm still in the process of putting it up on the wall bracket but I have spend most of Xmas playing around with this, sofar, wonderful new TV.

Pros: Extremely good 2nd PC monitor, Im so impressed at the 1920x1080 native res of the TV that Im running pretty much all my visuals (DVD, HDDVD, Divx, Xvid & HD movie files like WMV/MKV formats, through the TV and it looks gorgous. I use a DVI - HDMI lead from the 2nd DVI slot of my, also recent purchase, MSI 8800GTS. Once its up on the wall above me Im planning to simply use the vertical extended desktop mode for when I need the extra space, otherwise I just switch between either the Dell or Sony depending on what I want to watch. Already tried Crysis on the Sony and, using the 100Hz montion enhancer, it is simply the most visually stunning game I have seen on a screen (been around since the pong days). Plenty of inputs 3HDMI 2 Scarts 1 VGA-Dsub 1 SVHS 2 Components and each input can have its own settings (it does take a while to sort out the settings, Im still learning about the menu but Im happy with all my settings, used AVforums for suggestions). The Sony also handles my Xbox 360 stuff beautifully, again with motion enhancer, it makes games, Halo3, better then on my Dell monitor. There is 100s of different ways to setup the TV using the menu system, everything is tweakable, although it can be overwhelming at first. Last but not least, it is an extremely good looking TV, just a real pleasure so far in all.

Cons: Normal analogue display, TV SD DVDs etc, is not that good, but comparing it to any other LCDs out there, it still the best, Im pretty happy with it but then again, I hardly ever watch TV. I do however have a vast DVD collection and even with an upscaling DVD player, it is not all that good, it has a hard time with dark scenes, dark shades and esp. dark blues. But again, compared to nearly all other LCDs out there, it still one of the best. If I wanted to go for decent analogue I would have gone for a plasma screen, but they have too many other drawbacks I didnt like. Oddly enough, running my DVDs through the PC and using the DVI-HDMI output, I get a much better result and viewing pleasure in playing normal DVDs then using my upscaling DVD player through HDMI, strange. I also noticed some tearing after experimenting with running some PC games through the Sony. It was only really noticable with fast moving and bright scenes, forinstance, a scrolling landscape while there was thunder and lightning. I owned a ATI X1900XTX before I upgraded to a new MSI 8800GTS and there is definitely a lot less tearing now then before, I hardly notice it anymore. But I do suspect that same problem could occur with 360 games but I have only really played some Halo 3 and that just runs beautifully. No chance of getting it to run properly out of the box, it does take a lot of fiddling with the menu settings till you are happy with what it looks like, but then again, this could be regarded as a plus. Although it could be a bit overwhelming to some but there is plenty of help on the web for the menu settings. I heard a lot of 'clouding' issues with Sony X series on the AVforums, however, apart from analogue stuff and even then its very little once you get the settings sorted out, I did not notice any at all with PC/Xbox and HD stuff. Transformers at 1080P on this screen is just awesome.

Edit: Before I bought this TV, the shop manager was kind enough to setup this TV along side a Pioneer Kuro Plasma, Sony 40W3000 and Samsung(cant remember which but it was the best they had in stock). The Kuro plasmas are still the best at displaying Black levels, no doubt, but then again, when I watched HD content, the X3000 was in a league on it own, even compared to it previous range, the w3000, it looked miles better. It suited my needs, it looked good when doing 1080P stuff and it came with a 5 year guarentee, so now I have one :).

Edit: I have also read on forums that people have had trouble with fan noise from this TV. Well my X3000 is as quiet as church mouse on Sunday. Both my PC and Xbox are louder then my TV, if I switched them off, I cannot hear ANY noise from the TV at all. Even when it was on for @4-5 hours over the Xmas period. Then again, my living room is fairly well ventilated and I keep it cool(ish) 16-20C, depending on the weather.

Right I think I waffled on long enough. I hope that this is of some help to you people but if there are any other questions, I would be happy to try and answer them.

All in all this is, sofar, a fantastic TV for my needs.

Happy New Year.

Cheers

Soya

PS will try and get some pictures but 1) the screen is not yet mounted on my wall bracket yet 2) I dont have a digital camera :P.

Have some questions if its ok:

Have you noticed any tearing with the PS/3?
Can you setup customised profiles for individual HDMI inputs?

I dont play PS3 games on the 40X3500 , i like 26" only for gaming

Yes you can customise profiles for individaul HDMI inputs :)

Blu Ray & HD dvd you get some amazing results on 40X3500

Best LCD on the market for sure

Cant believe how overpriced the 46" & 52" of this set are.
Sony gotta be joking

Example a quick search shows:
£2600 or more for SONY KDL-52X3500

Sorry but for that money you could have a 32" decent HDTV for general daytime tv but revell in the awe of a 1080p projector and screen.
Well you know what i done...

Id like to be able to enjoy SKY HD Films and Sport on a descent size screen. Setting up a Projector is too much hassle.

However I do agree the top end Sony Bravias are overpriced. But Sony have developed the best post processing electronics eg 100Hz Motion without artifacts. Unfortunately you end up paying a premium for the privilege.

At the risk of sounding thick, why on earth would a TV need a fan?
Most likely because of the heat from the PSU..
as these large flat screen TV's (LCD & Plasma) can draw between 300 to 450watts...(1080p screens also use more power then 720p screens)

Edit:sony KDL-52X3500 = Power Consumption 305watts

Thank you all for the compliments, Im glad my review, hopefully, been of some use.

I do agree that Sony is a bit overpriced, they always have been. But on the flipside, they are like the Porsch of the TV industry, yes you pay more, but then again, you get more.

Like I mentioned before, I took the X3000(x3500) model because it handles my requirements and together with the extremely good 100Hz motion processor it has, it makes my PC/Xbox 360 games looks rather awesome, esp. FPS games. And as for HD content, its really is in a league of its own.

Best thing I would recommend, is make a list of things you really want from your TV, then see what budget you have, think VERY carefully about screen size (I almost went for a 46x3000 but realy glad I didnt, it simply would have been too big for my lounge), spend plenty of time searching the web on review/techspecs on the models you have narrowed down on and finally, IMO best to buy from a local shop that offers decent price/guarentee and if you are lucky, you could ask the shop manager to perhaps display the few TVs you have in mind so you can visually compare them, that in the end, is what made my mind up.

Anyways, good luck with whatever your choice will be, hope it works out.

Cheers

PS. I finally have put the Sony on the vogel 6325 wallbracket, its right above my Dell 2405, Slightly tilted down, it looks fantastic. I tell you, when me and a friend put up the wall bracket and I had to lift the tv towards the bracket so my friend could tighten up the bolts, when he said 'OK you can let go now' I simply couldnt, I had to wait till I was too tired to hold it up, I was too scared it would drop :).

I've heard the 100hz is the best by far on these sets which is what might be the most obvious thing (especially for gamers) to justify the excessive price tag (along with the sony name). Do you use 100hz for everything then btw?

Also, how drastic would you say the difference is on fps type games with it the "100hz thingy" enabled / disabled?

Have you got any pics btw?

I don't want much! :D thanks again

From what I can understand, the 100Hz motion enhancer add extra frames to each picture, there is non, standard and high settings for the motion enhancer. I believe on high it doubles the frames it receives, so 25 frames becomes 50 frames, apparently.

I dont use 100Hz on HD content and SD DVDs, as otherwise it makes movies look odd, a bit like it was shot with video camera. I use standard 100hz setting when viewing analogue stuff (some SD DVDs), it just smoothes it out a bit. But in PC/Xbox games I set it to High 100Hz and it look a lot nicer, smoother would be the best way to describe it. Forinstance Crysis, which runs pretty good on high settings at 1920x1080 but frame rate does tend to suffer in places, with 100Hz on high, it simply smoothes out those moments, so it a very nice and useful feature for the purpose of gaming.

My current MSI 8800GTS handles both my Dell/Sony extremely well, right now Im using the Dual View option in NVIDIA control panel, running Shrek 3 1080P on the Sony while Im typing this reply using the Dell. Very nice, but most of the time I simply use single display and swap monitor depending on what I am doing.

No pics alas, dont have a digital camera but will try to see if I could 'borrow' one from someone, no promises.

Cheers
