Specifically qantas
But other airlines may also be helpful

Normally we get health insurance
Which also covers if you have to cancel
As the flight (qantas uk to Australia) was 6 months ahead
But already booked and paid
We thought we had plenty time to sort insurance

My partner had a yearly routine mri
And something that they weren't actually looking for showed up
She has a large GIST (type of cancer)
she has been told flying especially that distance is a no no
It may take 9 months before chemo shrinks the tumour
To a size where they will perform surgery
As its in a very awkward position and large any surgery without shrinking it
Would be very risky
So basically she can't fly this year
And if operated on next year won't be allowed to fly next year either

Not expecting a refund as would have to be very lucky
Though also have no idea if credit card
Carries any sort of protection in this instance?
Obviously can't now take out the insurance as would be a preexisting condition
So cancellation insurance included would I imagine be void

Is an airline likely to
Let you transfer your flight to a couple of years in the future?
Or let you change the passenger details so someone else can go?
Or even get really lucky and give a refund?
Or some option I haven't thought of?
If we tell them wont be able to go
And they say sorry tough luck
Am pretty sure they would resell your seats?
It's not a small amount of money and the thought they might
Resell the seats and get paid twice doesn't sit very well

I know only qantas can give an absolute answer
But would like to know what happened to anyone in similar circumstances
Before contacting qantas
Sorry for long rambling post got pneumonia and low oxygen level
Makes thinking clearly difficult
Or worse than my usual state of mind

Ps.
Don't suggest anything that involves something
Naughty about taking the insurance
And not mentioning the cancer
She wouldn't have any part of insurance fraud she's too honest
For her own good sometimes

Wishing your wife all the best. Hopefully Qantas help in resolving, no direct experience but if they seem unlikely to refund a good compromise would be to see if they can provide credit to use for a future flight.

do the tickets talk about refund / change fees ?
[seems accepting credits maybe a bad idea if they were offered https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/...s_flight_cancellation_and_flight_credits_are/ ]
otherwise I think I'd just be honest about the reason - to the degree of even sending medical justification.
Yeah going to take the be honest
And upfront about it approach
Waiting for letter from the oncology consultant now
And will see what qantas offer
Before deciding what to do
It's still months away so plenty warning for them
And it's only direct flight from UK to oz they would be able to resell
Our seats absolutely no problem
Everyone wants those seats with basically Unlimited legroom
On that 17 hour flight

Can usually change flights or at least get a “voucher” in return. Often there is a fee to do this, but much less than simply not using the paid for tickets.

Sorry to hear about your other half. Hope all goes well with the operation.

Firstly i hope everything goes well for the wife and wish her a speedy recovery.

Log into your Quantas account and manage the booking, it should let you cancel the tickets there depending on ticket type etc or will ask you to contact them

https://www.ceoemail.com/s.php?id=ceo-10287 Or use the Email address for their CEO here. I'd normally say follow their internal processes and complaints route before contacting the CEO directly. However, unter the circumstances and to try avoid the back and forth and stress of fighting for a refund a nicely worded email to the Top might just avoid all that and get you a refund.

Firstly it was remiss of me
Not to say thank you to people who replied
And sent her good wishes
So apologies for that and thanks to you all

Never occurred to me there may be
A qantas account @pigeonguyuk
As we have always got the stepson to book the flights
He uses his credit card and gets something out of it
Air miles or cashback etc
Then we give him the cash
I will look into that

Thanks for ceo contact details
I have Resorted to directly contacting ceos before
Though again never occurred to me in this instance doh!

Collected gp letter today
Awaiting the consultants letter now
Since a consultant I guess may carry more weight

Hopefully next week will have everything
And be in a position to see what happens then

If you’re in a situation where you have to cancel a non-refundable fare,
you’ll lose the fare but will get a refund of the taxes.

I had a similar situation some years ago
Ultimately decided to pay the nominal change fee ($50 I think)
to change the booking to 6 months later to buy some time.
So consider that as a last resort rather than cancelling and losing a large chunk of the money.

In your booking confirmation, it should list a fare class denoted by a letter, e.g. Y.
Find out what that is and someone here should be able to decipher the conditions of that fare for you and possibly find a way to help.

Really sorry for you and your other half in the circumstances.
Wishing you both the best.

(Not taking the **** with formatting btw.
Saw your sig and thought it might help)

Thanks for replying similar to my weird typing mate
Really does make it so much easier
For me to read
Blocks of text I have to reread it over and over again
Yet still my brain may miss words

To everyone else
Thanks for the advice
And the well wishes for my partner
She's tolerating chemo with only mild side effects :)

Qantas issued an 80% refund
Bit painful to lose 20% of what was a significant amount of money
But was relatively straightforward at least
First person we phoned refused a refund
Phoned and spoke to different person
she agreed in the circumstances they would refund 80%
without even requesting the medical proof we had

Going down the cancel credit card payment route
Would have been stressful for my partner
Which she doesn't need right now
So yeah anyone finds themselves in a similar situation
There's hope to get some sort of refund
Just need to get the right person on the phone
