Thinking of getting a set of these

Mackie HR284 Pro Monitors

Not heard them but they have amplifiers inside so i belive i can just plug them straight into my x-fi, and plug my sub amp into the .1 part of my soundcard (if it has one) though apparently i dont need the sub with these speakers :o

Any thoughts ?

err

mackie HR824s. they are 500quid a side studio monitors. very highly regarded as an industry standard for the price and peformance. we arent talking abbey road here but you know what I mean :)

what do you need them for? what type of thing are you going to be doing? playing games, watching tele, or mixing music?

they are big. 8" cones. and they get hot fast. the amps are good. good crossovers etc.

Unless you're going to be doing any proper work on them then you would probably be better off buying a decent £600 pair of standmount hifi speakers, some heavy stands and a good amp to go with them.

You would be able to plug them directly into your X-Fi, although you should ideally get somthing with balanced line level outputs this would set you back at least another £400 or so to get somthing worth while.

Also if you decided you needed the Sub I imagine it has its own specifically designed crossovers in it that you would just pass a full range signal into and that would then have a set of outputs to send to the tops.

If you are intent on getting some studio monitors you should also go and listen to them - they do not sound like hifi speakers for a reason, there is also plenty of competition around the £1000 mark for good quality active speakers, although I would personally think you'd be better off spending about £600 on the speakers and then getting a decent soundcard.

Look at some of RME's offerings as they have some of the best converters on the market next to Apoogee and Prism Sound.
