anyone help a noob oc an 8350 to 4.5

hI chaps i am after some help advise on how to overclock my 8350 to 4.5 ghz please


I have an msi 990fxa-gd80 mobo with 8gb of ram (667mhz clock acording to hwinfo ) and h100i water cooler for cpu and 850w psu

i am a noob with this sort of stuff but i have attempted a walk through but wanted to ask you guys in case i totally screw it up..


i only use my system for gaming and the odd bit off uploading to youtube..

Just set the multiplier to 45, ram to correct settings and leave everything on auto. If you encounter stability then you will need to increase Vcore slightly until the system is stable.

Use asus realbench to test stability.

Temps shouldn't go above around 60-65C.

Don't use a Vcore of more than 1.5v (though you shouldn't need anything near that to get 4.5Ghz)

ok ive tried and ive ran prime 95 for 10 mins, not long i no but the kids came back had to stop... i came back with 0 errors on all cores temp maxed at 45c

Good point. 45 would be epic though... :D

I wouldn't use p95, it doesn't really show real life usage. Use realbench instead. Temps look good though!

well ive gone for 4.6ghz and ran realbench as you suggested and it passed temps even stayed ok maxed @48c

ive set it myself if i go to 4.8 it failed on 2 cores so settled for the 4.6 which i thought was ok for my first oc.. i cant remember for the life of me what i set it to though lol im going to have to look tomorrow and right it down
 
Quite impressed, looks like you have a good overclocking CPU and motherboard combination there. The voltage is good for the frequency. 4.6 is very useable.
 
well did 3 hours ish on bf4 last night without any problems fps stayed very stable and high also my temp was good highest being 48c. before i watercooled on stock clocks was hiting 70c very often!!
 
No experience with MSI boards and I really hope you don't have the one that likes to ignite, but the first stop is the BUS.

Get it to 230 or so, offset your ram and then work on the multi. 4.5ghz? hah ! you should do that with your eyes closed on a 8350.

I've not touched the bus or ram.... I have no idea what to set them to... I adjusted voltage and multiplyer to get 4.6 and ran the stress test it passed.

Any input as to adjust them would be great as I'm guessing would make system run faster or more efficient
 
i had a little fiddle but really no idea what im doing lol had a very slight improvement just by running 3dmark on skydive

my temps stayed fine as did everything else.... if i try going higher it crashes would this be my limit or do i need to change ither settings or maybe a better quality ram

You might have better luck by overclocking using the bus. You can see that its set there to 200Mhz at stock. You can manually increase that, meaning you have to use a lower multiplier to get the same OC.

If you delve back a few pages in the thread I linked earlier theres a really good guide on there

The above is the guide I've been using, all credit going to ALXAndy. Basically:
  • Reset everything to stock
  • Put multiplier as low as possible (on the crosshair its 4x)
  • Raise bus frequency 5Mhz at a time until windows fails to load
  • Go back 5Mhz to the last frequency that windows will boot from
  • Raise multiplier to get desiered frequency
  • Add voltage for stability (dont go over 1.5v is the general rule)
  • OC ram and north bridge to desiered levels (based on what ram you are using)

ok awesome i will try it now... i have no idea what to do with the ram and nb though will have to read up on it ive left them on auto i think
 
4730ghz ran stress test passed temps stayed good... ive been using hwinfo thought i would load up cpuz maybe hwinfo doesnt read the core voltage correctly!!

still no idea on north bridge or ram clocking would it really give me much better results???

set your ram speed to as close as you can to its rated xmp speed, thatll give you most stable performance. NB doesnt do a huge amount. As above, set it as high as possible until you get instability, then dial it back a notch
