*OVERCLOCKED* AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz @ 3.80GHz / Asus Crosshair III Formula Motherboard / Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Bundle

what sort of temps will that run at? i have a HAF 932
been thinking long and hard about i7 and decided against it can't justify the extra cost £400 for a top end AMD versus the £700 of a decent i7

only thing that concerns me is the ram 4gb vs i7's 6gb
 
Yeh that is often the case regardless of platform - more physical ram sticks will force the max OC speed down due to the load on the memory controller.

also wouldn't the 3.6/3.8 overclock amd have the i5's pants down begging for mercy?

i5 would probably be ideal for you, I recommend a i5 750 with 4GB OCZ Gold PC12800-C8 and a Gigabyte UD3 mobo.

Only reason to go i7 is if your doing lots of CPU intensive apps and need access to large ammounts of ram. If you want to go crossfire or SLI in the future then get the i7 system :).

The difference is minimal you really wouldn't notice the difference.

No, clock for clock the i5 is generally faster at most things, and unless you're extremely unlucky then the i5 should overclock better too, 4GHz+ can be had with decent cooling.

:eek: Are you sure your 4870 died, and it wasn't just the fact that you're running an out of date underpowered psu?

No 8 pin cpu power connector tells me that it's obviously either:

a) a fairly old psu or

b) it's a bargain basement 15 quid special!

When you're considering the money for an 955/965 you should be looking at i5 as well.

Clock for clock it's faster and should overclock better too.

x8 x8 is fine for crossfire (as long as it's not x2 cards) as it's pci-e 2.x which has double the bandwidth of pci-e 1.x. I think there's a comparison knocking about which shows a 1-2% loss by running x8x8 over x16x16.

IMO the only reason to buy the 955/965 over an i5 is because you'll be jumping on the 6 core bulldozer and want to keep your mobo.

actually it's a antec neo power HE430 plenty of power for the 4870 the fan bearings went and the shop i got it from offered a full refund as they didn't stock them anymore.

Yes exactly why i've decided on the above bundle as long as asus provide support for the new 6 cores

Fair enough but I'd seriously consider upgrading your psu, it's the most important component in a pc. I also wouldn't go as far as saying your current psu has plenty of power for a 4870, imo it would be on the limit especially when you consider the ATi system requirements here, 500 watt or greater.

actual card use is 180 watts ish plus i have a load checker plugged into the wall under load the cpu ram and mobo drew 122 watts of power

ati always over budget for power supply they say the 5970 needs a 1000watt psu but i can tell u for nothing it dosen't

anyway when i upgrade i will be getting a new psu anyway for later crossfire use enermax revolution 85+ 850watt

.i got more pc games now than i can shake a stick at not happy the bearing went on the 4870 and the HSF bearing went but managed to get a alpine 64 new and sealed from auction for a whopping total of £1.35 LOL.

Anyway ring me when O2 sort that friends and family out
