OK, my machine is mostly used for games and internet. No picture or video manipulation.

inside my box I have:-

Intel E6300
Gigabyte DS3
Geil 2GB value RAM (can't remember what exactly)
Gainward 8800GTS 640
WD 160GB SATA
WD 80GB SATA

And outside an LG 22" monitor.

I need more space so replacement HDs are definately on the shopping list.

I've got upto £500 to spend on upgrades but I want to include a 24" monitor. Possibly £600 pushing it. I could possibly forget the monitor if I really have to. If so I'd buy 2 HDs and RAID them.

Box and cooling are all fine. Box is coolermaster and has 3 or 4 ultra quiet 120 fans on a controller - its quieter than our Sky+ box :)

Any help really appreciated. :)

Oh, DVI.

Doesn't need anything else though. The PC is connected to the TV (dual output on the GFX card) so we watch films on that.

Don't know if its worth the move to Vista yet. Doesn't really offer too much I don't have already.

Thanks

OK thanks. Quite like the Iiyama 24" might put it on hold though if the graphics card will struggle with a 24" and high res.

I'm finding component upgrade much harder to decide.

CPU I'm not sure of E8200 - E6750 or even a Q6600

Memory I'm not clear on the difference between 6400 and 8500 but I would like 4GB.

Thing is I don't know what is best matched together from the above two components.

Plus 2X 500HD to be RAID.

The board I believe can cope with the changes above and the graphics card clocked seems happy with most things.

go q6600, no reason to go pc8500 as it will eat your budget, just make sure you have 4gb pc6400 and overclock it :)

then get 2 x 500gb samsung spinpoint single platter sata2 drives :)

any cash left and sell the 8800 and get a new ati x2 or a cheap gtx now :) just because on the bigger screen with a higher res you will need a better performing gfx card if you wish to play the newest games :)

ATI X2 will cope with 24" no probs and i run dual monitor and 40" lcd on the card playing COD4 at full res. It doesnt even break a sweat.

Well recommended card!!

Any recommendations for the 6400? OCZ Gold - £55 OK?

Will stick with the GTS for now. Going to get the components first, then the monitor and if the GTS really can't cope I'll flog the bits off I've replaced and the GTS and get a GTX.

I guess going quad might improve longevity of the setup over staying dual (e8200).

I have seen so many Quads being sold and Dual Cores being bought as there is hardly anything taking advantage of Quad's at present.

Depends what else you do with the pc.

Downloading, gaming, manipulating images, virus scanning, updates etc all at once then yes a Quad is a good choice. If not then a Wolfdale is the way forward. :)

Well, I've decided on the OCZ gold 6400 2x2GB sticks

2X 500GB spinpoints

Just the CPU to decide. I tend to upgrade every 12 months so would I better off getting a dual and wait for newer quads next year or when more things use quad cores?

Maybe just get an E8200 and clock it to 3+ for the time being?
