GF was saying she saw a job online for a chauffeur salary was £55k.
I'm not going to apply but couldn't help but thinking how hard can it be?
Anyone done it? What’s involved? Surely it’s just a case rocking up whenever they want you and you drive them wherever they want to go. Apparently it was driving a Rolls Royce Ghost but it would soon be changing to a Phantom. Just don’t drive like a mad man and don’t prang it.

Found the job:

I'd imagine it is one of those sorts of jobs where anybody thinks they could do it but to do it well you would need a very specific character. Also as Housey points out I imagine the hours would have an impact on your social life. From the advert wording I can't see "sorry boss, I would come out but I've been on the beers" being accepted when you get the 10pm call to action.

Yeah doing it and doing it well are another matter - I know 1-2 people who do stuff like that - they basically disappear for like 3-4 months of the year but then on the flipside they seem to take like 2 months or so living it up somewhere hot before going back and doing it again for another 3-4 months so for some I guess it is worth it.

EDIT: Probably a bit off on the number of months - one person I was thinking of in particular did Jan to end of May driving.

To be even considered for that sort of job you probably need something like ROSPA certification. Being ex-police or ex-services is probably also a plus.

I used to do something similar. Money is very good, 99% of the clients I worked for were very easy to get along with, and of course you have the pleasure of driving around in cars you’d probably never be able to afford normally. You’re frequently paid for sitting around doing nothing, and some clients would even pay for me to eat at 5* hotels whilst they were in meetings or conducting business.

The downside is that the hours can be very difficult, and you can be called away at any time to work, even if you’re in the middle of a family event or something. Getting holiday can be hard too.

Overall I loved it, but I’m not sure I’d do it again.

Sounds like a young and or single mans job to me!

Or the other end of the spectrum, old enough for family to have flown the coop.
True it's a job I like the sound of trying short term just to see what it is actually like but I couldn't do it for long I like rotund and being at home tooo much!

I did some chauffeur work years back, it was boring - hours of sitting around waiting - and not particularly good pay although it was my first proper encounter with an e38 a then brand new ‘97 750iL V12, loved them ever since.

It would be far easier these days with mobile internet, tablets, etc etc. It sounds like a good gig for someone to be honest.
Yeah, true enough, I kill hours these days sat in my truck waiting to load / unload by watching iPlayer, browsing and watching drivel on YouTube.

The ad does state "but you will always have 2 uninterrupted days off per week" which i would believe would be contractual?

I had contracted days off, the problem is that there’s people queuing up for the better paid jobs, so if you refuse the (normally very good) overtime they give you for working on your days off, they’ll just find someone else.

Sounds like a young and or single mans job to me!

My gf complained a lot about it at the time, but to maintain the same lifestyle we had back then, she now has to work as well as opposed to spending all her time lying on the beach / watching movies whilst I paid for everything, so I suspect if I went back to doing it she wouldn’t mind so much. Personally though I couldn’t do those hours again.

You most likely will get days off,, but I bet they will never be the same two, and I also bet you probably won't know which two until a day or so before.

Money is good, hours are awful, and even on days off you will be on call and have to drop everything at a moments notice to go and drive, at least that was the situation I was in when I did it many years ago, could never go away on days off, as always had to be within half an hour or so of the boss, in case something came up.

To be honest, from that post, it doesn't sound as though it is a job which you could do..
